Does anyone comming up from south of Oxnard have a "feel" for when on Saturday the group will be passing by Oxnard?

I know that Tim and I will be coming up from LB on Friday, we'll leave in the morning and if all goes well should be in Oxnard around sunset. We'll leave Oxnard heading for Santa Barbara city on Saturday morning. Best guess would be around 10am.

Sounds good, there are ample guest slips in Oxnard which is where we will be staying Friday night as well, so we will see you guys in the guest slips.

The boat show is being moved to the east side of the harbor this year. It may consume all the guest slips that the county rents there. I will swing by to check at the harbor masters office, to see if this is true. Otherwise there are a few slips adjacent to Penninsula Park on the west wing of the harbor.

Yikes Steve....please check on that and report back. I guess Ventura harbor could be a back-up? keep us posted.

are we talking two different things here? The are two different marina's one in Ventura and one in Oxnard? so the boat show is at both marina's?

The ad in the "Log" calls it the "Ventura County Boat Show" at the Channel Islands Harbor. Steve said it will spill over to the place where we launch, have long term parking and get our guest slips. Their phone is 800-390-6694.

The boat show is held in Channel Islands Harbor, and will consume all the transient slips the county rents as guest slips, that weekend. There are more transient slips over by Penninsula Park, but the Harbor Master thinks they may be filled with tenents displaced from the boat show portion of the harbor. If not, they are available first come first served only, no reservations.
The ramp parking lot will be used for parking for the show ans may be constrained for overnight parking. Ventura harbor is about 5 miles further north and slips are available from the maina operators there. They will probably not be together, rather slips of tenents gone for that weekend. Rich is checking into availability where he stores his boat.
Stand by for further info..I am still on for a BBQ at my place, about 1.5 miles from the harbor...transportation will be available.

I'm not sure how important either of those Harbors are. For me it was just a place to stop for a night on my way to SB. I could just as easily anchor at Anacapa (I know...not a lot of great ancorages) or Santa Cruz for the night. I suppose I could radio Ventura when I'm a few hours away and see if they have anything available. Was anyone depending on launching from Ventura or Oxnard and if so why not either launch Friday and meet us on the water or launch Saturday morning and head out from there?

Bypassing Oxnard/Vta marina means can't top-off tanks? There's no coastal anchorage until you reach SBc. Also, it's best to cross the lanes direct (from Oxnard or SBc), so Ventura Marina seems almost mandatory? Bad wknd for a boat show!
I've done quite a bit of reading & chart review, still hoping to make the cruise. Last time I managed with just 2 rodes of 100' each. However, I found 20' depths at Santa Cruz, and used both anchors on short scope. Last time I was lucky, plus we didn't visit the more remote islands. But scanning the charts brings up a renewed suggestion ...
Most of the channel islands anchorages are 25 to 30 feet (MLLW), and that is the minimum at SB island. Adding 3' to the bow plus 5' for tide & surge, you're at 38 feet to calculate your scope. A scope of 5:1 is minimum for ocean surge ... 5 x 40 means 200' of rode for your main anchor. I'll also use my two older rodes to make up another 200' for the secondary.

Top of the tanks?...but you have a sail. When I left you guys at Santa Cruz a couple years ago, it was quite a nice sail to Santa Barbara City and asily done in an afternoon. I used very little fuel. I figure if I plan on making it from Santa Barbara City to Catalina with stops at 3 islands and no refueling, I better be able to make it from LB to SB on the fuel I plan on carrying (probably about 16-18 gallons total).
I think you do need more then 100' of rode and should be able to anchor in 30'. I have 300' plus the chain.

Besides, I'll bet the crew of the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria bitched about there not being any good anchorages or places to refuel on the way to the new world too!
