Anyone have any suggestions for improvements to what's out there before it goes to the top for review?

I will be happy with either the Topless or the dodger one , both look good and represent an evergrowing class of MacGregor owners .

On the line of converting to a trawler or motoring with the mast down or more specifically removed, I've always had the question about the stern light (on the X anyway) being tall enough to be legal. I once raised this question in a boating safety class and the DNR officer basically agreed but said try to figure out something and if ever stopped, just be nice to the officer (guess and hope they have common sense). I am considering mounting a second aftermarket stern light that I got a W-Mart to satisfy this legality but have not determined an neat way to be able to convert back and forth or drill more holes ( I know get over it and drill baby drill.) Thanks in advance to all for your wisdom and humor.

You should probably start a new thread on this, but I'm not aware of any height requirements for stern lights. Masthead (aka 'steaming') lights are supposed to be 1 meter or more above the side lights (or bi-color bow light), but I've never seen a requirement for stern light elevation. My yacht ensign staff on the stern coaming is actually a running light pole, and it's long enough to get above the bimini, so with no mast, I shut off the white stern light and just use that for the all-round white (2 mile rated), along with the bi-color bow light, the way most small power boats do.

But the most elegant solution, which also looks the nicest, is what JohnCFI did, reflected in his avatar; a stub mast with a legal masthead (steaming) light. Stern light remains where it is and functions normally. 8)

Been down to have a look at Stirling today. Covered in Night Heron poo

She is not looking so elegant right now, Stub mast idea was originally that of Duane Dunn, on Allegro

For a motor boat the size of a Mac I believe the law is a low stern light near or on the transom and a higher midship light . The steaming light should be replaced with a white light that shows forward and to the sides .

At 50 meters and up, under power, two masthead lights (forward facing, white, sweeping an arc each side to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam), with the rear masthead light being higher than the forward masthead light (USCG doesn't specify a height difference). Stern light must be white with a 135 degree arc (67.5 deg. each way). But a power vessel less than 12 meters can use a single all-round white, and if the red/green sidelights are in a single lantern and mounted on the boat's centerline (common bow light), the all-round white may be off the boat's centerline. That's why my flagstaff all-round white nav light, mounted on the starboard side of the helm seat on the rail, is legal if I shut off the OEM stern light, which I have on a separate switch just for that purpose. I don't need a masthead light that way, which is good, as there's isn't a mast to put the masthead light on when I'm in trawler mode. :D

Edit: Not to sound like a code weenie, but, well, I actually am a code weenie for work, so I just can't help myself.

Looks like it's stalled, so I played with them a little to see if they look any better.

No bimini or dodger.

With bimini, dodger, and bridge.

I got nothin' else. :|

Both look very good ! And either one will work nicely . Hopefully the Powers-That-Be will approve one of them .

I could probably move the letters up a little on the bottom one. Can't modify a raster image, though, so I'd have to start with the boat and make another with the letters a bit higher.

I like the top one better than the bottom, but either one is fine with me.

You did a good job in your designs ! Thanks !
