Oddly, my boat has almost every mod folks have listed here, except for a chartplotter and a few other electronic gizmos (like autohelm). Tandem axles, full enclosure, pressure water system, Magma grill, and so on, most of which came with the boat. So the few improvements I've made, other than cleaning up what the PO did (which took most of the effort I've put into this boat, which is a lot), include (in no particular order):

1) Disc brakes and proper trailer lighting
2) Large sheave blocks for 5-part reeving on the MRS - I can raise mast from the roller with one hand now
3) Ventilation via screened, rain shielded ports in the stern berth, low-profile scoop inlet on sliding hatch (hole was already there), passive mushroom on front hatch, and louvered vent in head port
4) 'Custom steering kit' from BWY - sails much better without the engine dragging on the steering
5) Upgraded ball-bearing fiddle blocks for the main sheet - encourages active sail control since it takes less effort to haul it in now

Improvements that aren't particularly special, or are replacements for previous improvements, include:

6) New DC panel to replace the junk mine came with
7A) A proper AC panel, with 30A main breaker, and three 15A branch circuit breakers, to replace the 30A marine breaker (only) that powered the duplex GFCI receptacle, all of which is wired with NM (aka 'Romex') and is falling off the headliner. Panel was a Christmas present, but won't be installed until the spring.
7B) [8+) shows up as 8) ]Spinnaker halyard and hound, 18" above headstay
9) Opening in bimini/dodger bridge piece to allow extended mast crutch to hold mast with full enclosure in place - good for river/canal cruising, when the mast is kept with the boat
10) Trailer receiver hitch (2" x 2" socket) with dual spare tire holder fabbed (by me) and added to trailer pole tongue for bike rack, step, or cargo carrier - sits sideways, but that's perfect for carrying bicycles parallel to the hull at the bow
Gazmn wrote:3A. 20" wheel - When isn't bigger better? & allowed room for wheel autopilot.
I actually have a 20" destroyer wheel, on a Merriman/Yacht Specialties pedestal I took off a previous boat. I should probably try it, if it fits the shaft. It's just sitting there, collecting dust. I keep meaning to sell the pedestal, wheel, chain drive, and push/pull cable, but just don't seem to get around to it. :D

Improvements I haven't yet made, but are high on the list, include:

11) Bigger engine, so youngest son can get more fun on his wakeboard
12) Proper bow anchor on a roller - largest Danforth that fits the locker isn't very good, and even the Fortress FX-7 just doesn't cut it, though it's better than the cheap-o Danforth knockoff that came with the boat
13) Galley - what a mess. Bushels of wasted, unusable space, and it looks like carp. At the very least, I need to gut the interior of the galley and rebuild it to reclaim some of the dead space.
14) New interior cushions - I'm too cheap to buy them, but I may try making them. Just need a sewing machine (sister is in the sewing machine restoration biz, though  ).
15) Nasty leak that needs fixing, and I can't find where it's coming from. Port side only, coming down the headliner (so it's not the rub rail or joint), and I've already rebedded almost everything on deck. Grrrrrr. :x

Does the Yeti fit in the liner in the settee just forward of the head, where the original was, and if so, what size is it? The OEM cooler is about the thinnest, cheapest you can buy in that size, and I go through ice very quickly, like every couple of days.

I also get the mod bug when I can't be using the boat. My addiction is directly proportional to boat usage. In the summer when I am using the boat I am generally content and 99% of my "thinking time" goes to trip planning & rarely do any mods or think about them...soon as my trips start getting cut back out comes the mod bug again 8)

My favorite mods are generally small things that simplify the boat and make it less of a hassle to go out as often as possible as quickly as possible.

Wet slip as close as possible to the house/work would be my "#1 mod" (most expensive too :? )

After that probably every successful organization mod. (not all were) If everything has a place or is attached solidly there is nothing to stow before heading out. Toss cold items in a fridge and go. Seasonal items, clothing, cooking odds and ends stay on all season organized, nothing spilling or dumping about in the cabin. Leaving for a weekend is a 5 minute 1 bag transition. Being underway to an anchorage at sunset on a Friday after a week of work vs back on the dock getting ready is priceless.

Can you post some pictures of this? I've been thinking of something similar, but haven't started measuring.

Ask, and you shall receive. It's in the Mods section already (I almost forgot I put it there :D ).

Looks like exactly what I was thinking. However, instead of fabbing from scratch I was planning on using:

Image
Step bumper receiver ($18 at Harbor Freight)

Image
Spare tire mount ($28 at Harbor Freight)

Those are the regular prices. They're always on sale or I can use one of the 20% off coupons they're always sending. I'll have to probably change the spare mount so that it mounts on the top instead of the side of the tongue, but should be a quick fab job. I have a four bike carrier already. I'm worried about how far they will stick out. Worst case, I can get two two-bike fixed racks. The fixed ones aren't too much money and you can find them on Craigslist for even less.

I didn't even know that step bumper mount was a thing. :D I made mine asymmetrical, so the bike rack doesn't stick out as far on the driver's side (and I have to leave off the second spare tire) to keep it within the 8 ft width of the goal posts, or it can stick out further on the passenger side, and use both spares. With two bikes, it can ride on the passenger side and stay within the 8 ft, as it's the handle bars that stick out the most.

I was going to use a pair of them back-to-back with the bolts common to both, but for what I wanted to do, I would have to rework them too much, so I just made my own instead. :|

OK. I am going to order the $17 Spare Tire Carrier from Amazon, but I also need the spare tire for my old 2005 steel :macm: trailer. Where is the best place to order that? Thanks!

1) Full enclosure
2) Swim Platform
3) Cup Holders
4) Stove
5) replace galley face so you can access crap behind it.

Actually Cup Holders is probably first.

HI TomFoolery,

The Yeti I bought was a 50 Liter one. We keep it just aft of the battery compartment in the back storage place. This way we can still open it at anytime and get to it. I went to Walmart and bought 4 - 1 gallon jugs that would exactly fit in the bottom and a couple nights before a trip I freeze them up. It also helps to stick a frozen block in the cooler the night before just to cool it down before you load it up int the morning. Once you load it up its quite heavy but manageable. Takes 2 of us to get it int he boat and exactly where we want it but once its there you don't ever have to do anything else with it. I don't buy ice but I freeze my own. After 10 days in 25 to 30 degrees Celsius temperature it still had ice and kept everything cold. The cost is about $400 but as long as it works thats great and it does:) I keep my cooking supplies like pans and stuff in that area that you were talking about. :macx:

The mods you should do first are the mods that will get you to use the Mac as much as possible. Gadgets are nice, but the most important mods are the ones that you can't live without. For us:

1) Dual axle trailer with dual electric brakes. In my opinion trailering is one of the more risky phases of using a MacX and this was a $4,000 (cdn) investment for peace of mind.
2) Mosquito netting at companionway and hatch
3) Real toilet
4) Cockpit enclosure

Three out of four of those aren't cheap. But without any one of these we simply would not be making the trips that we do. Well, we would, but fewer and with more inertia (reference to the Chinook great loop thread). These are the mods that would simply HAVE to be repaired if anything went wrong with them. If my cool down-imaging sonar GPS unit fails? Chuck it in the garbage and let's go sailing. Shore power fails? Toss an extension cord on board and let's go sailing. BBQ falls off? Cold food in the cooler and we have an excuse to visit more dockside restaurants. Mosquito netting tears? Get it FIXED or stay home.
