Lots in the Canadian media about horse meat lately. The horse racing industry, huge in this area, has been waning of late (withdrawal of gov't support), and because of high maintenance costs owners are having to sell good horses (even thoroughbreds) for slaughter. It's a very disturbing situation with no easy solution.

A lot of that meat gets exported to Europe (UK) and elsewhere, some is consumed in Quebec and Ontario, but it's not so popular. Some drugs and pharmaceuticals, once administered, because they break down so slowly, prevent a horse from ever being suitable for human consumption; for good. And yet when sold for slaughter for human consumption the paper trail is required to go back only 6 months! A loophole being fully exploited by unscrupulous horse brokers that puts unwitting (how could you know?) humans at risk. While some of the drugs are nasty enough, others are known human carcinogens.

Yipes! I'm staying away from horse meat for a while.
