Reviving an older post...
I've received my new seats... no instructions but fortunately,
it's fairly intuitive. Looks like I move my life lines to the adjustable eyebolts at the top of the rear stanchion (red arrow).
I have a question about rings on the aft side of the seats. The Yellow arrow points to them. What are these for?
I saw one picture in another thread (
http://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/v ... ts#p144872) that looked like a block was hung from the ring for the rudder lines. Is this correct?

If they came from blue water yachts..there should have been directions..if not..call them

PaulS : Shore power, you feel, is un-needed??? How do you charge your batteries? Do you have a slip at a Marina?
You say your looking at a 37 ft. sailboat that has no shore power hook up?
Who All, Makes ( offers) Stern Rail Seats?? Is it just BWY?

I'm in the middle of my BWY stern rail seat installation. Before purchasing I asked Todd to shoot me a pdf of the instructions. I'm going to PM you those instructions.

Just remember guy's. There are no backing plates on those stern rails. There is alot of force applied by someone setting on those things. Especially when sailing with a 150-200 pound person setting on them. Sooner or later they are going to loosen up. Mac's are light boats and so is the construction.

We have the BWY seats and they are VERY strong. I often stand on them and they feel solid.
The "rings" are for the rudders. Helps move the rudder lift lines off the hull as well.

On our Macgregor? In the driveway with a charger.
We did purchase a 1968 Ohlson 38. No shore power. No AC power. Just 12 volts. Have a balmar alternator that can charge the batteries on space shuttle! Haven't had a problem yet. We keep her on a mooring. Be a challenge getting a shore power cable to the boat!

I believe BWY is the only game in town. I think there are many dealers, but the seats all come from them.. i could be wrong.. but that is what I heard a while back.

Paul, Wow! That looks like a mod I will seriously look at incorporating into my rig. Currently, I'm the only one in the family other than my eldest son who can easily pull the water-filled rudders out of the water.
CapnCarp, Definitely in the plan! I'm 230lbs (some of it muscle...alas, too much is not) and have smaller teenaged sons with their friends who never tend to consider structural stress tolerances when playing around.
I have been intending to use the largest backplate that I can fit on the inside at the connection points. I've got some 2" wide, 1/8" thick aluminum stock which I've set aside for this; plus, I was planning on 5200'ing the bejeeezuz out of the connections. Once I crawl in and see what space is available, I'll find out if I can go with a larger, thicker backplate.
I was wanting to stay with aluminum or steel and not use wood for the backing. I had a wood transom on my first boat that rotted with age and water damage. Never want to go through that again...
I have some leftover white cutting board from another project on the boat and I was considering using it was a 'soft' washer between the FG hull and the metal backing plate.

The rudder mod is the single greatest thing I did on the boat .
But follow the directions to the letter.. Do not improvise or try to improve it.. it WILL install VERY solid if the directions are followed to the letter.. I am a bigger guy..and the seats are VERY solid when I sit on them.
For sealant..I would go with boatlife instead of 5200..be hard to service it if you ever had to later..
Same deal with the rudder mod..follow the directions to the letter.. its pretty easy/cheap to do..and the payoff is great!

Paul I agree no shore power hook-up is really needed, if your Mac lives in the driveway.. Its just very convenient and if you have a seasonal slip, it is for sure..
We have a Cruise-Air and a 110 V. Fridge and a Box fan etc etc and every so often, we use the boat in spite of the fact the the weather is non-conducive to sailing and of coarse, it always has our 3 batteries at 100%.

Our Mac slip has no shore power, so solar panels it is. It works well.

Has anyone compared BWY seats to those of KH marine. Are they the same size or BWY are a little bigger?
I know those from Dowsar are bigger, but so is the price
