Is it fair that sailers in Ohio need to have lights bright enough to see for 2 nautical miles?
What I mean is . . . with all the pollution in the air impededing the light's visibility and all, shouldn't we be given a little leeway?

I can't help but jump in.
Bought an LED pool solar light two weeks ago and mounted in at the top of mast.
Unofficial Visibility +/- 3/4 of a mile (in marina with considerable background light)
Easily lasts through the night.
Was approached by no less than 5 other boaters commenting on the great modification and wanting to know details in the Thousand Islands area of Lake Ontario.

click on "Garden & Patio" tab
enter the sample postal code to get past the next window
search keyword "solar floating light"
There are two listed. I bought the first one for $19.99
PS How much more waterproof can you get??

LED anchor light
Here's another illumination on the topic:
I just received my issue of "DIY boat owner" magazine in the mail and found an article on building a daylight-sensing LED anchor light.
Not ABYC certified for sure, but it looks like a good winter season project.
That magazine is worth checking out. I had an on-line "Ezine" subscription for a year then switched to a print subscription. It's at www.diy-boat.com.

Sorry, Moe - just saw your post and realised I hadn't answered you!Moe wrote:Kevin, that's mounted mightly low considering the junction box on the back of the panel. How did you do that?
The junction box is on the back of the panel, and is quite small - it fits well inside the frame, with plenty of room to spare. The panel's frame is alloy rail-stock, about 1.2" wide, and you can actually see the mounting screws for the junction box on the aft side of the panel in the photo. The wires are connected to the junction box and go forward from there, and then there's a small hold at the front of the slider where the wires go through. Underneath I have a coiled cord - much like what you'd see on a hair dryer, but smaller - and that allows the slider to move without wires hanging down.
