Don't do the mac bump in the parking lot. Do it while the boat is in the water if you have two people.

1. Pull boat on trailer and winch it up as far as you can get it.
2. Have person in truck ease forward about 1 foot slowly or as soon as the bow starts to pull away from the V bunk and then hit the brakes while you put pressure on winch handle and the boat will slide forward.
3. If the bow doesn't make it all the way. Grab the bow pulpit and shake it very hard back and forth (side to side really) while turning the winch. The boat ease forward.

Repeat step 2 and 3 till boat is out of water.

If your solo just ease up 1 foot at a time or until you see the bow move away from the trailer and just use step 3 alone. It will still work just a lot more shaking.

MATT! Maybe, - looks big and expensive and heavy and ugly, but then. . . :P I dunno, I need to think about that.

Maybe we should talk it out over some beers.

FOUZ!! I'm gonna try that!

(If you were not so far away we could do beers on that one too!) :)

I saw some at harbor freight that were quite a bit cheaper, although I expect they'll only work the three times :-)

Something about this just seems dangerous to me. Having people that close while tow beast is pulling up the ramp. Was a story here last week, a little girl was standing on the tongue of a trailer while dad pulled forward. He didn't see her fall and she was run over. Poor girl died after being airlifted to the ER. Sad and makes me think nobody should be in that area while the rig is moving.

If not comfortable just skip step 2. Works just fine.
If your like BOAT and use an RV where you can't keep eye contact I could see your worry. But its a boat ramp. You shouldn't be going anymore than a few mph.

And just to highlight this one point.
If you have someone helping they should know their only suppose go "1' foot or till the bow start to pull away from the trailer". Which if their doing that, that means they also have eye contact with you.

And don't use your small children to load your boat :?

You can mount any kind of winch you want, but in the factory position, it will work the same way because the pulling angle is just wrong. I tried a power winch on my 26X, years ago. It was more hassle than it was worth and slower than I could winch by hand. Not to mention we're only talking winching a couple feet, or less, with these boats in most cases.
It sits in a cabinet in my workshop now.

The 26X would settle onto the trailer correctly on very shallow angled ramps. Trouble is most ramps are much more steep than what is required.

Anyway, I stick by moving the winch to pull up on the bow, as the best solution.

How's Oceanside? I haven't been there in 20 years. Am I correctly remembering that it's quite a way to the ocean from the launch ramp :?:

No it's like spitting distance from the launch ramp to the Ocean. It's an open ocean harbor - (there is no bay and no protection) The navy helped with it because people needed a safe harbor between San Diego and Newport (which are both bays). Lots of lives saved, but it makes for a tiny cramped harbor.

You can watch the waves crashing on the beach from the launch ramp parking lot!

Change over 20 year? I dunno - People say so but I really don't know. I have always hung out downtown and that part is different because its so crowded now.

I must be thinking of another place.

I've been to Qceanside before, but long ago. I'll try it out one of these days.

I was thinking of somewhere along the south coast that seemed to take a long time to get out to the Ocean. Can't think where it was. My 26 X was at Dana Point, when I first owned it. I would have kept it there, if I could have afforded it at the time. But with boat payment, slip fee, insurance, property taxes and boat bottom scrubbing diver guy, it was just too dear at the time.
Now, I guess I'm a diehard trailer sailor

Newport is pretty bad - and the ramp is behind a bridge.

Alamitos Bay is another one - but it's not quite so far to the ocean. There is a bridge at Alamitos that makes it not work for the mac - a 23 foot boat can get thru but not a 26 (mast too high)

Dana Point is one of the best - Ramp is a great ramp with great parking and right next to the mouth of the harbor. Dana point is one of the best trailer boat places in a California.

Yep (re: Dana Point) I love that place. I'm going to have to get down there again one of these days soon.
I've been mostly fresh water sailing for several years, where I used to only sail the coast. I'm looking at going back to the salt though because all these crazy new laws and fees and permits and boat inspections over so called invasive species. (both in CA. and NV.) They are getting really stupid over it all and it is just costing all of us more money.
And I don't get it.......... Lake Mead is the cleanest and clearest I've ever seen it since the Quagga Muscles came in. Of course the other problem there is....... it is slowly drying up. It's lower than ever now.

So likely, back to the Pacific for me.

Yeah, that's what the rich people do - they have a place here in Del Mar or Cardiff La Jolla so they can be close to their boat and then they have another place out in the desert like Borrego or La Quinta or Palm Springs or some other So Cal desert. Best of both worlds - it must be nice to be rich.

Meanwhile us poor people are here spraying our boat trailers with snot so we can get our boats back on the trailer cuz we can't afford a slip.

Not a bad life, really - I think those rich folks don't know what the're missing! 8)

Steve K next time you're in SAN let's get BOAT's boat and beat up the cost to Newport, get drunk and pi$$ of some rich people, and then go downwind back to Oceanside. Long weekend.

Matt,
Great offer :!:
I've bee trying to get some time to go sailing all year and so far, no joy.
But eventually, I may have to take you up on it

Everyday, I look out in the back yard at "Three Sheets", sitting there all lonesome and un-used. At least with her new full cover the desert sun is no longer slowly killing her.

How far is that by sea (San to Newport) :?:

San Diego to Newport is a long trip - it's a two day trip in a MAC unless you sail at night which really is not a problem along that stretch of coast. It's very safe to sail at night along there and I have sailed there at night a lot. But is is a long trip.
