Got my knock-off many years ago made by Bosch. Was a godsend when we were renovating our house up north. They are now even selling similar multitools at Aldi's here and whenever they are selling the attachments I stock up as they are a fraction of the cost. "Fein" in a way is a knock off as well, the oscillating saw goes back to orthopedic plaster cast saw invented in the early 1940s

Thanks for pointing that out. In history of medicine, the invention of the still nowadays in use oscillating plaster cast saw is attributed to an American Orthopedic Surgeon, Homer Stryker. He filed a patent for this in 1945. Fein may well have started producing plaster cast saws at the same time as well (as much as this was possible then) but they would have been more like a circular saw. Not that I am trying to pull down a very reputable company in my old home country The Fein Website points out that they produced their first oscillating tool in 1967 :



I remember seeing the Fein multitools in exhibitions many years ago and being simply in awe. Their reps kept on pointing out that they were as safe as the plaster saws ...

I've managed to find the original patent for the oscillating plaster saw by Dr Stryker, who went on to build up a very successful company of medical devices:



When you read the text of his patent application, he describes how the same principle can be used to cut other materials like "bone, plastics, wood and even metal".

Fein is a fine company , pioneering the electric drill and the delta sander amongst other inventions. Their motto in German translates as "undestructable powertools" ... but hey, give your fellow American inventor some cred !

I went and found a local outlet for Fein... $300 really? IMHO its a waste of money unless you are going to use it a heck of a lot.. OR your building museum quality furniture etc etc .. and then you wouldn't need it.. Very serviceable quality units are available for less than 1/2 often less than a 1/3 the cost.
