If I read your post correctly, you're looking for sailing notes or just curious about an area. In that case, you might try http://www.activecaptain.com. It's not model specific (or even power/sail), but does provide info for planning trips (marina info, sightseeing opportunities, etc.) which has been collected by members/users.

Seems to be the easiest link.

Any sites specific to destinations in North America?

This is the only forum I invest any time in at all. I'm an avid motorcyclist, photographer, amateur astronomer, programmer, and classic computer collector. There are forums for all of those persuits, and other than the dusty and rarely visited old computer sites, they're all infested with people who can't tell the difference between a difference of opinion and a personal attack.

Photography forums are the absolute worst in my opinion, as they are dominated by pseudo-intellectuals who think that equipment can obviate skill, that brands are religions, and that bashing new members asking questions on sites that can't be searched easily is funny.

Amateur astronomy sites are a bit befuddling, as you'd think the people frequenting them would be in some sense scientific in their nature. Mostly not, from my experience. They seem to like owning telescopes and calibrating them more than using them.

Programming sites are mostly ignored by most real programmers, so they're just noobs giving really bad advice to other noobs.

The motorcycle guys are a rough lot, but have some real camaraderie, and because there tends to be a dominant site per model, you get a bit more of this feel. But they curse a lot, bawl people out, propagate their personal opinions as facts, and post naked pictures of women they don't know on other people's bikes.

I like this site. It's well moderated, and I'm reasonably certain that all the naked photos have been authorized by the subject and are on the poster's own vehicle.

I am with Mastreb on this one for sure.. BTDT ... Our Moderators do an excellent job.. Ive been guilty of some of the "crap" displayed from time to time and have been..... redirected .. It can happen with the best of us .. Its our moderators who make a huge difference. Its also the general attitude of the board members that make a huge difference as well.. Being required to bring it up a notch and keep it there, also , makes the difference. Garbage in garbage out and this board is pretty tight on The Garbage..

I think this forum is without equal. The complete lack of spam and the well meaning efforts to keep things on topic are things I like. That way there are not tons of posts about peoples other activities or hobbies. The users are helpful and knowledgeable. Any solution that's offered is not held as the be all end all to the problem. Everyone seems grounded in reality about the Mac and doesn't freak out at some slight against it.

It's under www.sailboatowners.com. There are also a couple of facebook sites...nothing as good as this place. Just sent in my contribution for the year. 8)

I had a look at the other site, I don't bother with it any more, the 'experts' seem to be on this site, and it is really well run.

I've seen the other site descent into 'mac bashing' which is not helpful.

Thanks, folks, for your kind and generous comments regarding our work as volunteer moderators and the board itself. It's not perfect - we've had our bumps and problems. That being said, I like to think that we provide fair and consistent moderation on this forum while trying our best to appreciate the varied personalities and 'ways of communicating' that we all have online, and that has resulted in what you see today - a 'safe harbor' of friends who provide valuable and accurate information to support the MacGregor boats and sailing/power-boating in general.

As noted, I join in encouraging you all to contribute to supporting this forum. You may do so by clicking the "Resources -> Support this Website" links above in the blue bar. PayPal is accepted. Please note that any donated funds are 100% allocated to the costs incurred in providing this forum and this is *not* a 'for profit' enterprise - indeed, it's far from it!

Thanks again for your support, on behalf of Heath (our forum sponsor) and our other fine moderators (who, frankly, are way better at this moderation thing than I am!).

Cheers,
Kevin McLemore

If there is a shortcoming to this site it is that there are few facts related to boating in Southern California. You can get more info about launch ramps and destinations from other boat sites because most of the people that frequent Southern California in sailboats are not in a MAC. They are in ‘something else’. If you want to know about the Pacific North West, Canada, or the South East this IS the place to get anything you want to know. Californian sailors in general are ‘sailboat-snobs’ and very few have Macs and if they do they don’t talk about it. Just think about the guys in the Hamptons, and you have a good picture.

I use “Launch Ramp dot com” and stuff like that to get the low down on what ramps are crappy, the cost, and where it’s safe to stay overnight – stuff like that. It’s the fishermen here that have the best info. As I read the comments of young boaters on the other sites I’m sort of surprised how much things have NOT changed here in Southern California since way back in the 70’s and 80’s when I was very active sailing up and down the California coast. The same ramps that were crappy are still crappy and the good ones are still pretty good. Nothing seems to have changed. There are a few excellent additions and improvements along the coast that I have yet to explore.

As for the moderators, they are Nazis. ALL moderators are Nazis and that’s what they are supposed to be. If you let people just go willy-nilly these websites can become really uncivilized really fast. I know – I personally have been the instigator of strife and rebellion on several web sites and was officially branded a professional ‘Troll’ by dozens of moderators working for major news organizations. I honed my skills writing inflammatory propaganda back in the 70’s when I was a political anarchist. (News Flash!! EVERYONE in a California college back in the 70’s was political anarchist), like as if you all did not already know that.

Anyways, Mr. Popeye is obviously a rank amateur, and not worthy of wasting any good bait. There are a lot of better fish in the sea than “Popeye”.

(See, THAT’S how you do it dummy!)

Good job Comrade Klemore – you handled it well.

Thanks, BOAT, both for your donation and your kind thoughts.

That being said, I can't say I'm fond of being called a "Nazi", even in light of your good intentions. I try to use a light hand when needed, and a heavier one when a light one won't do the job... and I also try to be very responsive to member requests, too. I'm not a proponent of jack-booted moderation and I try my best to give folks a lot of rope before I try to reel them in.

As for the SoCal info, well, you're from SoCal, so part of why there's not more info may be because you haven't contributed it!** ;) :D

**(how's THAT for inflammatory?)

Yeah, I'm still not quite back in the swing of things here in So Cal in regards to sailing and it's going to take me a while to get back up to speed. I'm a LOT older now too and move a lot slower. Sorry about the Nazi thing but back in my day there was no such thing as "Political Correctness" and I need to remember that there are certain words we used yesterday that are not supposed to be used today. My wife and I are really amused by the attention we get when we say the word: 'Mexican'. My wifes parents were from Mexico and when people ask her what nationality she is she says "MEXICAN" and some people freak out like it's a bad word or somthing so now she says "Mexican, and proud of it!" It's funn how things change. We called the police "The MAN" and my friends my age that are or were in law enforcment still say "Fuzz" and we all get some pretty strange looks. My generation will be dead soon so that kind of thing should fade away for good in short order.

Anyway, your doing a good job as prison guard? zookeeper, censor? (geeze, I don't know what to call it!) how about "EDITOR" How does that sound? Those of us whom have been in the publishing industry feel the word 'EDITOR' is even more insulting that 'Nazi'. (At Rolling Stone the door to the Editors office says 'Company Fascist'). It's a hard thankless job, thanks for doing it.
