The rudder line does dangle which is a cause for concern but I didn't know I should be pulling and securing the slack. I thought normal operation was to not secure down so they would be free if I were to hit something.

Great discussion. DaveB, Love to see pics of your break away setup. How about posting a mod?

We launch from a shallow tidal boat ramp & go over a sandbar to get to the main harbour so I'm definitely going to do this.

From what I've read, the breakaway is sensitive to rope angle. Did you put them directly on the top of the transom or did put wedges under them?

Cheers

Jeff:

I'll have to check them out when I see your boat, they have been on my list since last year... but when I looked at them the last time I passed because they only supported the 1/4" rope. When I repainted the boat I got all new riggings for her, but as it turns out the full sized 3/8" line that I bought would not thread through the 3/8" fairleads which I built up on the aft deck:
See this mod for details: http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/in ... ?view=1511
I ended up putting the old rope back in to actuate the rudders since it was just slightly smaller then 3/8". Given the working loads on this control line I feel comfortable downsizing these to 1/4". 8)

Wow, you really went to town on that Chris. You can check out those release cams any time you'd like....they're sitting on my kitchen counter (much to my girl's dismay). I'll probably install them next week when I get back into town. You're mods are looking really great!!

The main driver behind that mod was water getting into the boat: In the factory design, just a hole drilled in the side, water could "drain" into the hole. The bumps raise the rope entry point, and the fairleads give that "finished" look. Since then I added stern rail seats - and these almost cover the holes limiting water in that area. All in all I rearley ever see any water in the boat anymore.
