Some people in forums think Roger is a learn as you go kind of guy. Maybe he read our forums, and he has decided to do HASP testing on an older Mac. lol

Bet on a new boat in the next year? Where did that come from? A new boat in a year, and in the process, Roger needs a old boat, owned by a forum member, to button up the final nuisances, with destructive testing? I do not think so.

I am wrong all the time, it is called being human.

I am not challenging Mike at his word on anything. I must have missed a post where Mike says no new boats for the masses. I think his original post was real. I do however question the dynamics of looking for a past product a manufacture made, for destructive testing, on a public forum. I do not recall ever hearing of such a scheme before. I believe it would work, but why not just purchase a boat, a used boat, in secret, and then do all the destructive testing on the boat they want, behind closed doors? Why make a public declaration, they want to test a boat? Who does that? Cessna gets on aviation boards and looks for an old model plane they can borrow for a week? Glock asks for a gun back so they can drill a few holes in it, polish it, and return it, or maybe buy the gun, and maybe give a dinner away? Whole thing is somewhat like a Monte Python skit.

Also, I do not treat for profit businesses as charities, sorry. I run a small business, and it never occurred to me to put a donation box next to items I have for sale.

Ok I'll put up $100.00 that says you are wrong. The only new boat from them for some time will be the 70 and not a smaller boat. I"ll take Mike for his word on that.

So if by this time next year, let's say Jan 1,2013, if they have announced a new boat other than the 70 that is on the market or going to be on the market I'll donate $100.00 to this site. Now if there is no new boat in the works or on the market you will donate $100.00 to this site.

Game??

I didn't see any mention of destructive testing. I saw a mention of wanting to confirm certain assumptions with real world tests and the hull of the 26D is the most similar hull to the design they are contemplating. My guess is the free paint and polish is because to do the testing they'll be marking up the hull while they do water flow tests over the hull. You can simulate that stuff, but nothing is a replacement for real world tests.

While they may have old data from the original design of the 26D, technology has changed a lot and today they can generate a lot better results. They could look on the used market, and buy a 26D, but that would likely cost them $3-5k, while a short rental of a boat will probably cost them $500-$1000. Macgregor may be the biggest sailboat manufacturer out there, but they are still a relatively small business, and economizing matters.

Also, this website is a for-profit business? Maybe, but I run a motorcycle forum with probably 3-4 times the post volume, and ad revenue has never been greater than the cost of running the system.

Buffing out the repaired fiberglass is what exactly? Quote: " We will test, then restore your boat, all factory fiberglass repair and buff "

If all those words do not mean destructive testing, what exactly could it mean? Does not sound like they want to test a new boat wax.

As I was here pondering what it could mean, I had a hunch. I checked, and the moon is full, at 98%. Lol

I run a forum also. No ads, never had any, for members, guests see some. Never charged a dime for it, payed it all myself, without a whimper. For years. I moved it to a free site, costs nothing, except guests see an ad or two. Members still see no ads. I still make nothing, but it costs me nothing.

Sad fact, Face Book is killing one subject forums. Most forums see their numbers down. One forum I go to did 20,000 posts a week, now they do that in 6 months.

Maybe Roger wants to help someone out in the community, possibly get an owners opinion on the 26 D at dinner. I just don't understand the need to be so pessimistic :?

I think he's gonna cut it in half. Take some measurements. Sink it in a test tank for buoyancy testing. Paint it black. Test again.

Then glue it back together and buff it clean before returning it.

Simple. All the clues are in Mike's post.

He's going to measure the hull speed of white, blue and black hulls. :P

I owned two Mac 26x`s, 1997, 2000, I owned a 1988 26D. Without a doubt, macgregors finest Sailboat would be a 26D or a 26C. that would be Sailing capabailities,
The 26X & 26M only advantage is more room and the high speed motoring.

Maybe Roger has tapped my phone and is going to steal my idea.. a great Sailing MotorSailer..

Make a Sailboat that sails as well as athe 26 D, and could reach motoring speeds of 12 mph with a 25 hp motor. Dream On..

It's not possible to sail as well as the 26 D and also reach speeds of 12 mph with the same monohull. Displacement hulls sail but cannot plane safely, while planing hulls can go fast, but are "tipsy", prone to sudden dramatic changes in heeling angle as chines go under, and have less inherent stability beyond a capsize point.

For decades naval architects thought of hull shape as a binary choice, and MacGregor was the first to try to find a balance between the two concepts.

His tactic was to make the forward portion of the boat more of a displacement hull and move the sailing center of effort slightly forward of a typical Bermuda rig, thus allowing the forward displacement hull to take effect more dramatically, putting the bow lower and the cockpit higher out of the water while sailing.

The aft hull is shaped for planing, with a powerful motor on the back that (with enough power) lifts the displacement-shaped forward hull out of the water to plane on the aft hull. The need to yaw the boat to forward while sailing and aft while motoring is why there needs to be so much more free-board than a typical sailboat.

It was brilliant and it works astonishingly well, but there's no getting away from the fact that its still a compromise. Actually the boats plane far better with a 90hp motor because it gets more of the displacement hull out of the water. Its unclear to me why the factory clings to a 60hp maximum motor rating when the hulls obviously can safely perform better under higher power.

In any case, The M is about as good a balance as you can possibly get between a displacement sailor and a power boat. MacGregor used powerful analytical software to optimize the shape of the M hull for both conditions that didn't exist when he developed the X hull, but its testament to his architectural skills and intuition that the boats perform so similarly. Personally I think I prefer the X's truer planing hull because I think the slight gain the M has in displacement performance isn't worth the larger drop Ms have in planing performance.

So - I'm thinking that we should put out riggers on it but the cutting half and streaching it to a 34 would be sweet also. LOL! :D

You guys are funny, maybe they want to use some ones boat for some testing, then for the use of the boat they will sand and buff the hull out, maybe have a dinner at Bobs big boy or something, wait isn't that what Mike said they were going to do?

Come on, If I had a D sitting around for many years, haven't used or taken care of it for awhile, I would let them use it Get it back all clean and shiny. hull they can use my M with a 115hp on it if they wanted, just leave the beer in the fridge when they are done, or at least replace the beer. 8)

How about it mike, Roger want to use my boat? Just let me go and dump the porta potty first...... :D

Wasn't the boat that capsized in San Diego w/the loss of 2 lives a 26D? Could capsize tests be part of an ongoing legal situation? I hope our legal system hasn't gone there, but ....
