My point is there is not a 1 to 1 relationship of ENC to paper charts any more. There is this relationship with the raster charts such as BSB or Softchart, but it does not exist in the vector products.

The Puget Sound ENC charts are based on the 80,000 paper charts yet the series 2 ENC's have the detail from the 10,000 charts added to them in the harbor areas. They include both the large and the small scale data in a single product.

Okay, Duane, now I understand what you mean about the ENCs.

I downloaded the Type 1 ENC for chart 14844 and free Fugawi software. At first, I thought, what is this? The chart named "Islands of Lake Erie" has the whole island area marked as no data available... no islands (except the Canadian islands and a tiny chunk of Put-In-Bay harbor, an inset on the paper chart), no mainland shore detail, nada. It's worthless.



Then I pulled up MapSource and saw that the missing area on the ENC 14844 chart is the shape of most of the large-scale charts from the chartbooks put together like pieces of a puzzle. I guess, that like you say, they'll eventually be plugged into it. Either that or put in their own ENCs yet to come. Here's what that area should look like:



Just for grins, I also looked at the "Western End of Lake Erie." There's also a big missing data area in the shape of the "Islands of Lake Erie" ENC. And there are other missing areas where that area is covered by another ENC.

So while one ENC may cover more than the chart it is associated with, it appeaers it may also cover less, and require the use of additional ENCs to fill in the holes in it.
