I think we drilled about 40 holes in it with the biggest bit we had on hand in the field

We didn't bring tools for a "salvage operation" We came to pick up a 20' boat with 'good tires"

Making Memories as my mom would say

:D In my trailer driving days, that's all we had, and those are just baby versions . . .

Image

of Dayton cast spoke wheels used singly on steer axles . . .

or as duals on drive axles, with a ring spacer (the scalloped edge thing) between the wheels.

Image

They're easier to change than Budd disc wheels, like the aluminium ones that are on just about everything these days, but they're heavier.

Those axles you have are probably either 6,000 or 7,000 lb axles, by the way. That style used to be uber common decades back for medium duty trailers, like tag-along equipment trailers and such. Not so much these days, as the one-piece welded disc wheels are cheaper and lighter.

But there's nothing wrong with those wheels and hubs as long as you torque the nuts properly, as the wedging action is what keeps the wheel from spinning on the spokes when braking. There usually are also a pair of welded plates on either side of the valve stem, in case it does 'spin'.

Ours looked like the top pic

except more rust/mud/ and one spacer/block was MIA so one tire only had 4 out of 5 (suspect thats why it wobbled)

but we made it

thanks for the info

It was still a sketchy trip

Yeah she is a beast....but I think there is around $3k to be had with the gear, the trailer, and the $800 worth of lead keel at the scrapyard

Considering I got the boat/trailer for FREE (Spent $100 in gas/misc to get it here) I'm already ahead 8) 8)

Going to start stripping it today

Looking forward to the disassembly pics 8)

If you duct tape that keel onto the VN 23 she should sail nice and flat....

Yup...right to the bottom...

the keel on this boat weighs in at more than my VN23, the trailer, and all the beer combined.

Well the boat has been stripped... scored about $800 in gear easy

Tomorrow she goes to Durham...thanks to CL a couple is going to cut the bottom out (the lead for me) and with the neighbors forklift and a lot of friends he is going to slide the boat off the trailer and it will soon become a playhouse for his two sons....what sold them on it when they came to see was that it was large enough to later on be a teenage hangout after the "playhouse" factor wore off....I'll have the keel and the trailer back by monday...Lead is .31 cents a lb and there is 2800 lbs..
'
then the trailer to sell 8)

Not bad for a $70 investment to go get it

Here's a pic of what happens when you become a hoarder like me

Cheers mates
