Would'nt waste my time of breath or lower my inteligence level reading all that crap from such low levels wanna be's going around telling everyone they r God ! of all sailors is setting them selfs up for Crucifiction , real people do not sell themsevles by the size of their nose's , real sailors do not sell them selves by the size of their boats Even Roger know's that

Yeah, and they think they are so fast - I bet very few of them could ever out run highlander. I bet not one of them have ever even handled a clipper rig before.
I seem to get the most disdainful remarks from power boat people more than anyone else - but many sailors can be pretty rude too.

If owning a Mac is wrong, I don't want to be right. Let them be critical, in fact, the more they are, the better I feel about my boat. I do think it was built for me. I'll take this community over that one, any day of the week.

I was a bit surprised that they seldom saw a Mac outside the Marina. That has not been my experience.

You have to get out of the marina yourself to see a Mac out there...
My very limited experience around that type of sailor or powerboater is that they spend a lot more time talking about boating than they do actually boating...("Yeah, we went to the Bahamas in my SeaRay last year." which is also the last time you actually drove your boat too...).
Mac drivers (and the fishing types I'm around most) tend to do a lot of actual boating, so they don't have to talk about it as much.
Insecurity.

When I get back to my slip after sailing around in 15-20 kt winds and having a blast, people are standing around asking me what the heck I was doing out there. Uh, sailing? But it's so windy, they say. Uh, a sailboat needs wind ya know? Anyway, there are a lot of dock queens around and not to many macs among them. There is my X, a 26s and a mac 25 in my marina. These 3 boats probably account for 75% of all the sailing done.
Thanks for the SA link; I needed to be reminded of their brand of socialization and why I prefer ours.

Good lord that was a sh~t website. Excepting the boobs, there was nothing morally uplifting or a redeeming quality whatsoever.
Reminds me of every motorcycling forum, photography forum (the WORST), bicycling forum, hacking forum, video game forum, etc. etc.
It's a great example of why this is the only forum I frequent. I'm way to busy doing the things I enjoy doing to waste my time telling fools what they shouldn't be doing.

At the Michigan City marina, there appears to be an inverse relationship between the size of the boat (and power boats in particular) and the amount of sea time. There are some really nice (expensive) boats that NEVER seem to leave their slip. And there are quite a few, that go out one or two times over the entire summer, anchor within a mile or two, sit for several hours, then go back into the marina. Gas cost - $100-$200 dollars. And then there are the smaller fry who go out quite a bit.

Could someone in warm waters temporarily attach some tell tales made from casset tape on either side of the mast slot and note how much air movement (leak) there in from the use of sail slugs. I would like to know how much air leakage at the mast reduces the speed of our average performing sail boats. All things considered I think the Mac is a great motor sailer and enjoy every advantage it offers.

I think Kevin was referring to the story of the guy on SA who met a Mac X owner in Cuttyhunk. They hit it off and the moral was don't judge people by the boat they own.
Overall, the thread at SA was very respectful of Mac owners and Roger. Weird.

Bingo - yes, I was referring to the Cuttyhunk posting in the thread. It said:
A few years ago I was walking with my son on Cuttyhunk and there was one anchored in the shallow end of the pond, which is inaccessible to us. I mentioned I didn't care for the design.
He came back that afternoon with a new friend, a kid from the 26X, we invited the family for drinks, they stayed for dinner. What a cool kid, and what a nice family. They hadn't grown up on boats, were just learning sailing, but they loved the boat, it seemed right for them. It was camping on the water. We made a big mess of pasta and drank jug wine.
We judge people too much by the clothes they wear, the cars they drive, the boats they sail. Of all the ways to judge a person, money is the worst.
I haven't worked my way up to a Swan or HR yet, but I've met a few owners, and most of them didn't buy their boats for the snob appeal. Like me, they just wanted a good boat to take the family sailing. Different people just have different budgets. We're all sailors.

My thoughts on this...
A properly set sail works not because it catches the wind, but because it forms an airfoil and acts like a wing. So, the power is not created on the windward side, but on the leeward one. Given that, the leakage, as such, would not be as important as the affect upon the leeward side. So... the real question is, do slugs offer better sail shape and do they provide for better airflow across the back of the sail?
Personally, if you use enough of them (naturally, you don't want huge bulges from gaps), I wouldn't think it would measurably impact the performance of the sail.
