It seems that the intruder bashed the companionway board probably with his boot. It appears that it easily fractured and broke apart allowing for the board to be removed from the side grooves permitting access to the interior of the boat.
Surprisingly the hasp held on well but did not prevent the intruder from getting in.
In repairing the damage I used the same, original hasp by simply bending it back into shape.
And a couple of ideas:
1. If you want to eliminate the possibility of being locked inside, put the padlock on the staple without, of course slipping the slotted part over the staple. This will not allow the hasp to lock.
2. If you want to lock the boat from inside, take your telescopic boat hook, bring it to the appropriate length and wedge it diagonally under the hatch from inside – one end resting against the lip of the sliding hatch, the other on the firm surface of the superstructure. This prevents the hatch from sliding open.

This shows that I need to beef up more areas and not just the top.

Eureka Catigale!
Contrary to the lore, it is believed that Archimedes was not alone in that bath tub.
It is further believed that there is a sexually related explanation to the implementation of his inspirations... especially the one resulting in the HASP.
(They say there is always a woman behind a successful man.)
Clarification: The 'HASP' in question is not to be confused with the 'dongle' (Hardware Against Software Piracy)
Ahh, this is getting so complicated. . . .

Homeowners Affordability and Stability Plan
but we mostly now it as
Houston Automatic Spooling Priority
My next mod. I'm thinking this might keep the buggers out.

I would not get to crazy in making your hatch bulletproof secure. Anyone who has the time to make a lot of noise and break into your hatchway has the time to break through something else. All our boats are fiberglass and what ever can cut your hatchway can cut your boat. So think of it this way what is cheaper to repair your hatch or someone taking a chainsaw and making their own opening anywhere else on your boat?.

Agree bank vault security for the cabin door is of no value.
For me it is a mater of taste. The flavor I was getting from my entryway latch was leaving a sour taste in my mouth. I also keyed the locks to be the same as a key I use at work, so one less key for the key ring.

I use a cheap combo lock.. I set it to my phone number. Simple and I don't worry about dropping keys in the drink and being locked out.
Now your mod looks cool and solves a problem.
If I were you, I would take it further...
"Key" less

Fob less.

I have several fingerprint locks around my business. They are a bother to operate.
