On our 03M we would experience bottoming out on the original foam. We tried a memory foam insert and it was comfortable, however it resulted in a slightly smaller sleeping area than the original Mac patterns. We then decided to order up another set of rear foam from the factory and, for us, it was the right move. We have also slept on the single berths and they are fine, but as stated here, it's best to cover them. In the end it is really all in what you like. Good Luck :macm:

ive been looking into the various types of foam that there are available,im ordering some heavy duty foam for the cockpit seats, the bunks in my 26x had never been used before we slept in them so ive been thinking going along a 2 ply route, softer at the top and heavy at the bottom.

I know nothing about the M or the X, but I've spent one night sleeping on my Mac 25, in the V-berth, and woke up with one of the worst back aches I've ever had. :x

I had the same thing backpacking until I bought the foam,

I have been sleeping 2 months straight on my M and the 1 1/2" foam and the 3/4 plywood gives me a good night sleep.

That's a great idea.

On our old boat, we used to an "egg crate" mattress pad. It helped a lot, but wasn't quite thick enough.

Some day, sailboat builders will be forced to sleep on the boats they make until they choose to install quality mattresses.

I think for the money I would rather build what I want and or what I will be willing to live with.
For us the aft berth is a done deal , nothing down there that cannot be reached from the battery hatch/cover. But that might not be desirable to all.
