I guess I did mean the 23rd, yes It was the 23rd I was thinking about.
Not the 16th. what was I thinking I cant go the 16th it must have been the 23rd.

Yes tag along. But you might want to check for a dinghy. If we stay on the arrrrh line you would only have to have a cheap Coleman 4 person boat.
less than a hundred bucks. to row ashore. You will want the versatility of it. or maybe Ill toss my old inflatable in my truck and you can use it.
rental on the dinghy will be one bottle two buck chuck. Trader joes
good stuff...

Friday 6am 23rd mdr launch ramp. weather permitting.
my cell 310-994-4212. full gas tanks 24 gallons. Two Harbours
by 10 am. I will be going straight from work
so a bit of a nap when we arrive will be needed by me till 2pm
That will give you a chance to explore a little
I need to be back Sunday by 12 noon.

radio: wont be able to hear it at warp speed on the way over but we will
keep each other in sight.

check out the Catalina web site to see what you want to do.
yep I did mean the 23rd.....Mike

I saw reference to a different mooring option in the Two Harbors PDF.
(But, I think it was restricted to boats <25 feet long?)
That's what you mean by above?

"the arrrrh line" ... inquiring minds!

Frank the first mooring line near the beach is A string it is right near the dinghy dock, where the Catalina flyer comes in. They call it the arrrh line.
Like the pirates....

Yeah, the PDF called it the 'string line.'

How is it used?

Just like all the other moorings. Its just the first line of moorings
in Isthmus harbour. I only used it once but liked it for the convenience
with the pup.(so close to shore) I normally stay in 4th July or
cherry cove, Thats a 5 min ride in the dinghy.

Hard crab I just noticed you have a 90hp motor...Ill have to toss everything over board to keep up.

Mark and Frank, Thanks for the link. I haven't gone that far back to peruse the stories. Good Stuff.
Mike, I'll do a quick check on a cheap dingy. I am considering a 8' Porta-bote to tow behind or maybe collapse on the forward deck somewhere. Haven't pushed to pull the trigger on one yet. I may just take you up on your borrow offer. I'll let you know as the week unfolds. Not much around here in the way of Dingy Stores. You will need to clue me in on that "beverage" you mentioned. Ain't no Trader Joes within 80 miles in this corner of the desert. Can't say I've even been in one before.
We keep our boat in MDR Mast-up, and we'll be in the area by midnight on Thursday. A little sleep, and we'll launch around 5:30am or so and stand- by. My cell # is 760-793-4569.
Don't worry, I don't push the 90 all that much.
Anyone else ready to pony up for a weekend trip?
The 23rd :D

Here's pic of our Mac on the string line last 4th of July weekend. More movement on the line than a mooring as the other boats move around but it's a good option if the moorings are taken on a busy summer weekend. My favorite quote overheard from another boat - "Hey if we are all here who's watching the trailer park?"

"Worth a thousand words!" Thx scott.
Just behind are three boats rafted. I'd have thought those mooring balls are too close to permit rafting?

Rafting is permitted and there's fair amount of space between the moorings depending on the skills of the captain and the wind. The PDF link on page one is a great free guide if you want more info.

No we stayed on R which is closest to dinghy dock. This book I lost had excellent maps of all the coves and mooring fields. Very handy to see where all the rows are when you are requesting a mooring assignment.

Yes I know the book well I have one on my boat
are you still going this week end?

Mike, just getting there has been my main focus. Duh, what to do when we get there? I imagine we will sail around some to catch the views , maybe do a very little fishing, go ashore to check out the resturants, hike around the mooring some, etc.,etc. Mostly get an overall idea as to what to do on the second trip. We are open to ideas.

Now some questions about the stuff needed and the mechanics of the tie- up. What kind of stuff should I know beforehand? Such as bow line lenght, that kind of stuff. I overheard a conversation about catching a floater or something to moor. What's that all about? Where I'm from in MD, no mooring bouys were around

Still on a limb about a dingy. Pokerrick makes a good argument about the $4 per ride/person. A dingy buys alot of rides.

We will be down to MDR this Friday. We are going to re-attempt a run to Channel Island Marina, RON, then head back Saturday.

Thanks for the help with the questions.

Re-attempt?
I'm interested to hear about your first attempt!

I'm surely not a SoCal sailor, but FWIW, I think MDR to Oxnard could easily present a tougher run than heading directly over to Santa Catalina. Why are you heading north in the SB channel?
