Well, the handgun doesn't really shoot as big a bullet...

Yes, the handgun's projectile is 1/2 in diameter. But, it isn't anywhere near as long as that fired by the M2 machine gun or Barrett sniper rifle.

It also doesn't pack as much powder behind it...

It is a 50 calibler round, but it just isn't the same round fired by a 50 caliber machine gun...

I've never fired the 50 cal handgun. From my experience, as long as the gun is an automatic, then the felt recoil is pretty managable. The cycling of the slide takes out a good bit of the bite...

[on edit]

My comments above were made before clicking Moe's link. I was talking about the 50 cal desert eagle and similar pistols...

Apparently, there are some breach loaded 50 BMG pistols out there. With that, I agree with Moe... I can't imagine ever firing one of those... Yeah, it would stop a bear. hull, it would shred a bear at the ranges you'd actualy be using it. Of course, the resulting broken/dislocated arm would be problems to contend with to...

Randy - thats very cynical. I dont think this board is so POLARised that the discussion need get GRIZZLY. DOnt you think running a Mac under BEAR POLES would make a great KODIAK moment??

Gary Larson retired..... young. Talk about a great cartoonist. He would be someone interesting to meet. I like the way his mind works.

Mark,

Why not start a new thread and tell us about your experience in the Apostles and Stockton Island?

I'd be interested in hearing/reading about it.

I used to have a Thompson Contender. It had interchangable barrels, one barrel held a .223, the other handled a .45 or .410 shotgun shell, with a screw-on choke. Had a scope.

It could blow big holes in things and was pretty good for target practice.

Is that a Black Bear on a Blue Hull, or a White Hull?
