My two kids are 6 and 7 and are on the boat with me and the admiral all the time. The M cockpit is smaller than the X, but I think that BOTH the X and M can sail nicely with main alone of Genoa/Jib alone. Given that, I would base my decision on X or M based upon other factors. Eventhough I have a M and LOVE it, a big decision factor could be the roughly $10,000 price differential between a Bare bones M and a nicely loaded X.....I could do a lot of nice mods with $10K.

Even a used M would save you some coin. There are 4-5 used M's for sale on this board in the classified pages....take a look. I bought a used 2004M that was only a few months old. Saved a few thousand dollars and I like the openess of the 04M over the 05M anyway. (not looking for a 04 vs 05 fight here)
