Here the Website Info....

By the way: what happened with the mac70? Still in production? At least it was one of the Macs water ballasted... How many built?

The point Kurz is making is that the information is stated as fact, not theory. Kurz is asking if anyone has actually achieved this.

I still have the original brochure from when I bought my M.

Sure enough, there it is, in the second paragraph.

So, has anyone actually achieved that speed under sail❓ it’s a fair question. Is the speed statement just in the :macm: brochure. I didn’t check our resource area; I’m leaving that to another.

It's in the 26m brochure. I never noticed that. Interesting.

But also Roger says to take out the rudder in speeds higher 6kn...

So how to sail without rudders? I I think they would break...
Baybe just use the motor down as a rudder?

I've gone to windward in enough wind to tear the clew out of my jib. I was barely making way and the boat was heeled enough that my son (in the aft berth) had his feet braced on the leeward hull. He said he was effectively standing on it.

In my experience, the boat will go approximately half of the wind speed when running close to directly down wind with the centerboard just barely in the water. Wide-open I can do 15kn on smooth water with the engine and no ballast but the boat is still not really (fully) planing at that speed. I suppose that it is possible that you could reach those same speeds under sail but my experience would suggest that you would need something in excess (possibly well in excess) of 30kn of wind to even approach it.

For an alternate opinion, my (calculated) polars say I will be doing 8.8kn on a run in a 40kn wind with a little over 1' of centerboard down. My VPP does not really understand the unusual hull shape of an X though so it may be underestimating the speed a bit. Regardless, I'm not going to have any sail up or even be in the water in a 40kn wind if I can help it!

Kurz,

You’re having me loose sleep with all of your deep philosophical questions. Which came first, the chicken, or the eeg?

You are forgetting Roger was a master marketer: Taurus pulling a Mac,17 MPH under sail, etc.

Well, I but I think it is much more easyer to pull the macs with a taurus than to sail 17mph... :)

To say: I starter with a 26 years old Mercedes w124 300T D...
Worked so far... Had great trips, perfect at ramps... But I didn't hat this "very fast sailing" yet..

Agreed. Rudders and center/dagger would not take it.

I wonder how many people believed him.

Kurz,

vergleichen Sie Ihren alten Mercedes nicht mit einem Ford Taurus. wie Russ sagte. Ich frage mich, wer Roger geglaubt hat😅

If I understand correctly, this isn't really far-fetched, is it?

The Taurus was a 6-banger, was it not? And the rate-limiting factor for a tow vehicle is the tranny cooling, IIRC. I thought the Taurus could handle it.

And no one said how far it had to be towed to be viable. If you can tow it from your driveway to the ramp, that's still something no one with a 30-footer can do.

In that sense, what he's really saying is simply "Here is a 26 foot sailboat that doesn't need a cradle/truck/crane; it can be launched by a personal vehicle." Which is, objectively, a pretty good selling feature compared the rest of the sailboat market.

Well, we know that the long distance car-towing can be done: remember Bertrand (username Quebec 1) and his old 3.8L Buick Lesabre towing from Quebec to Florida?
