So what I can’t figure out is how someone on the bridge didn’t sorta figure out that they weren’t gonna be able to go where they did sooner? On our relatively simple chart plotter we can set depth alarms and preview course routings. I figure with all the sophisticated electronics that a relatively new yacht like that probably had there must have been a whole ensemble of bells, whoops and horns going off!

Two of the guests were a NASA expert and an ESA expert.

The chart plotter was set to metres when they thought it was set to feet.

I'm guessing some captain is looking for another job. Probably leaving this gig off is CV.

I had the opportunity to watch a few races in our recent Gold Rush Regatta from shore, and might have to allow that there is a category where some level of snobbery could be understandable, namely the J-boat fleet. Watching not only the overall fine performance these boats offer, but also the significant difference having a good skipper and crew makes in overall performance, watching them was a bit humbling and inspiring all at the same time. A lot of the J-boats (and others) racing came in and left on trailers

With very few exceptions, I would say that every boat is a matrix of compromises. Even though my boat was not built for racing, I have fun squeezing every bit of performance out of mine and surprising others with what it can do.

Speaking of which, I have decided to pull the trigger on BWY's Big Jib rigging and LiteSkin sail upgrades. The Big Jib will take 6 weeks to get to me, so it will be a while before I can report on the results.

Probably works better if they thought it was metres but set for feet (think they were in 3 metres of water but in fact they were in 3 feet).
