Sunday a week ago I did get out for a day sail and tested my rear view mirror I had installed on the starboard side support for the Bimini. I really liked it. I liked it so much I will install the second one on the port side to complete the panorama view of whatever is astern. Field test: good. It gave me a good indication of any vessel coming up behind me or, as is usually the case, peace of mind knowing there is nothing there. The location on the Bimini support was out of the way of anyone sitting in the cockpit. The pedestal was then clear for the main sheet activities and movement fore and aft around the pedestal.

I know there is not much interest in this thread. My marina repair chief even asked me what I was putting rear view mirrors on a sailboat for just yesterday, but I have persevered and installed the second mirror. I located both toward the top of the support for my Bimini to be out of the way and still provide a good view of the wake. Rationale: I boat in an inland lake and river system that has a lot of motorboat traffic. In the channel of the river there can be only about 100 yards from bank to bank in many spots and numerous turns. If a large cruiser doing 20-ish knots overtakes you, the wake can be huge and it is good to know they are approaching so you can be ready to turn into the wake somewhat and not take it on the beam. Also, PWC's can be going 25-30 and be on you before you know it. I just wanted to have a little more situational awareness while I am mostly looking forward and talking to the Admiral or guests. Or eating Krispy Kreme donuts. Anyway, here is a pic of the set up.

I thought it was a great idea. I spend almost all of my time out in the bay. The little bit of time we spend in rivers can put me on edge (depending on traffic) due to the situations you describe. An easy view of what's coming up on you is a good thing.

That would be great. One thing's for sure. I won't be able to sneak up on you from behind...

Glad it was helpful. Now I actually have to get two of those for my wife's and my bicycles.
