I wonder if the Mac Dealers still sell stock rudders. I remember getting them from Arena Yachts... now recall actually breaking a stock rudder, but it was a trailering accident (didn't put the safety pin in) and the line popped out of the cam cleat... rudder met pavement.... pavement won the fight. :x

Getting a sail under a boat buck is all good. 8)

New sailing term I learned here today...boat buck.

Hope the admiral does not convert that into shoe bucks.

If your female the conversion rate would be one boat buck to 20 shoe bucks, if your male you have one perfectly good pair of shoes (there is only one hole in the sole), so who needs another, it just confuses you when you get dressed in the morning, I mean having to make decisions about what shoes to wear with those jeans is just too hard anyways

OK A word to the wise

Ur mast base swivel brkt the bolt will work its way loose eventually as it continuously rotates this should be on ur annual inspection check list & should be checked every time u raise the mast all u have to do is check for excessive play if there is then remove the brkt from the mast put some blue thread locker Loctite on the bolt threads & snug up enough to still let it rotate this is a 5 min maint. program

this issue happened to me a couple of times , but after I introduced this little maint. insp. to my check list every time I raise the mast I no longer have these issues as so as I see a little too much play off she comes & on goes the Loctite

this has been discussed before on this site so it is not something new

G really surprised u missed that but I guess ur were just too anxious & rushing to get ur boat in the water & get sailing with Leon :P

Anyway lucky for u it did not come apart while sailing that could have been nasty :o
If u r going to be up in Barrie this wk-end or home fri morn tomorrow I can drop u off some blue Loctite compliments of me :)

The rudder brkts r problematic I remember Crikey "Ross" mod his to strengthen them so I may do the same @ some point
As for ur new main Sail I know u r gonna get ur money,s worth outa it LOL

Will be interesting to find out if ur new rudder is the same size or bigger than ur original one !

I,m retiring on the 11th of Aug. so I,ll be with u guys for the Lagoon City meet before I head out west

I still have my original Mac rudders new in the box they were shipped in lol so if needed I could lend u one for the meet

Same goes for the mainsail I have a spare brand new oem mac mainsail I can lend u for the meet we would just have to install the slug kit I bought with it

ps that,ll cost u a few shot,s of Scotch :)

J. When you first retire you're not supposed to make any critical decisions, or drink excessively for the first year! :P
Racing sailboats might fit with that... :D
Gonna be in BC in October.

From what I can make out from Canadian taxes there is no free trade agreement between USA and Canada.

If I understand it right, you have to pay import duties, gst and local taxes as if you made the purchase in Canada.

Im I correct in that assumption, just I was reading on the Sailrite website about them sending stuff into Canada

I'll talk to you at the MMOR. Going to do the trans-canada trek to visit friends and camp our way across. Plans not fully set yet.

The tariffs differ based on precisely what the goods are, the cost of the goods, the country of final assembly and the country of origin. A sewing needle is classified differently than a piece of polyester sailcloth than an assembled sail, or a piece of cotton cloth. It's ridiculously complicated...

Based on feedback from my Canadian customers, when I ship via to Canada via US Post and Canada Post, customers are asked to pay local and provincial sales taxes. They report that they haven't been required to pay any customs brokers proceessing fees.

When I ship via DHL or UPS, there is an additional fee for custom's brokerage fees (of up to $160), so I rarely use these delivery services. Brokerage fees are handling fees paid to the customs brokers. By using government services, we avoid the customs brokerage fees.

I'm no expert on customs, and I can't predict what the government of Canada will do tomorrow.... but that's how it has been working for years. Your mileage may vary.... :?

You've got it right. We always pay sales tax, but some couriers (UPS) charge an outrageous "brokerage" fee of $25-$40.

Duty is rarely if ever charged for items coming from the US in my experience. Technically items assembled overseas and shipped from US are subject to some duty but I think it's too difficult to enforce.

Wow, the tax man gets you everytime and at every corner.

One of the big issues of bringing second hand boats into Australia is the customs charge close to $3500 inspection fee (bio hazard), just for the record thats about the same or slightly more than the cost of the actual transport via ship.

We dont have local taxes, just the 10% GST which in general we dont pay on things posted from overseas. we used to have a stupid tax system that different things are charged at different rates but I think the government found it was cheaper to enforce just by charging a single rate across the board, I think we have a free trade agreement with the USA or are working on it (the global economy and all that) so that should make NEW things made in the USA easier and less expensive here.

Are Hyde Sails in the USA related to Hyde sails here in Australia??

Seems like they have found a good little loophole in the customs and excise laws, so you buy it in the US and dont pay into duties into Canada, then you own it and are bringing it across the boarder as personal property or something to that effect, maybe take your boat across the boarder and come back with the new rudders and sails on the boat, how are they going to know if they are new sails??
