OK, my favorite celebrity sailor has to be; Joshua Slocum ... he became a celebrity by being a sailor - long before there were sailing celebrities like even Robin Knox Johnson.

He was my favourite too, until he forgot to file a float plan on his last voyage. His PFD usage record was spotty, too.

When I have tried to tack a carpet, I always end up in Jeremy Irons...

Number 4 is Ted Turner the "Mouth of the South", Americas Cup Winner. He won the Fastnet Race in England in conditions which were like those that destroyed the Spanish Armada and saved Drake a lot of heartburn. When he was asked what he thought of the weather by the British press, he replied," (paraphrased) "I loved it and you #$&%$ should too or you would be speaking Spanish now!" A calm sea never made a good sailor. Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old Salt.

One of my gripe points this subject, REAL celebrity sailors, not celebrities that sail here in Australia drive me nuts.

Australia runs the institute of sport, we the tax payer pay $$$ to support them, house them. feed them, pay for their coaching while they learn the finer points of the art of sailing.

Then they gain fame by winning events and here in Australia give NOTHING back, in fact they go and sail for other countries in events like the Americas cup, The USA Americas cup boat was skippered by a Aussie and Im pretty sure the tactician was also Aussie.

So we pay for them, then they sell their services to the highest bidder once they have achieved noteriaty in the sailing world.

I feel thats what is wrong with the sport of sailing in Australia, all the yacht clubs and tax payers pay out so these people can learn and get better and then they move overseas fill their own pockets and give nothing back, sailing here is going down hill rapidly because of this

I felt about as much connection to the Oracle team as a kangaroo steak. It's a farcical sport

Sydney to Hobart is the same, they just spent millions changing the bow for a benefit of 1 second per Nm, so 650 seconds or just under 11 minutes in a race that normally takes around 3 days.

I would of love to see that money ploughed into the kids "Tackers" program, the amount Yachting Australia or as it is now Sail Australia charge per kid to take part is just ridiculous, and keeps sailing pretty much as an elitist sport, rather what it should be a sport for the masses.

Great exercise, fresh air and learning self confidence and independence, with no violence (except ramp rage maybe :D ), basicly it can help our kids grow into everything we want them to be.

Let me see even 1 million dollars could of bought 200 training dinghies at $5k each, thats about 1 for every yacht club in Australia
