Here is what I came up with. My speaker placement has proved to be excellent, versatile and really quite simple to install.

Hello,
Anybody given any thoughts on using a bluetooth speaker? I've seen several waterproof bluetooth speakers and thought the might be a useful solution. I haven't hit any of the stores to see if there is decent sound.
Thanks,
Curwen

That might be a good solution. I installed a bluetooth receiver to my built in stereo. I do have a hardwired 3.5mm plug in the cockpit to connect iPhone etc.
I haven't used the bluetooth adapter since plugging it in, but it's simple and works.

We have The Amazon Echo device. Fantastic sound from a small speaker and the the automation features are from the Jetsons. This thing is really cool.
The Amazon Tap just came out and seems to be a portable version of it. It it's anything like the Echo, it will be awesome. I may get one for the boat.

Yes there are some Bluetooth speakers that have good sound. You are probably looking at around $150 range. I have the Solemate and it realy has good sound. Battery life is good It will play all day in my office at a low volume with no problem. At max volume I think I get around 7 hours out of it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I also like to play music while motoring. This means having a speaker which can handle a greater volume with reasonable distortion to the sound. What sounds good in an office environment, may not suffice on the water with the outboard and apparent wind doing their thing.

If you want to hear it over your outboard I do not think any portable speaker is an option.

Grady,
You understand my point.
I was just making certain the before making that purchase, be certain that the speakers satisfy all of your requirements.

For motoring I use headphones. Nothing will compete with them especially noise cancelling ones. Even if you throw a 2000w system in you'll still hear the drone of the outboard. While at anchor it is surprising how little sound you need, especially after spending a couple days sailing and sleeping on the hook, everything gets louder.
