Re: Challenge: Anchor washdown and cockpit shower
RobertB,
I'd be curious to see some pics when you get to the right stage? It'd be great to have an inboard unit!!
I'm going to only use mine on longer trips in the summer here, so a simple window unit and generator is where I am starting...but I do worry about generator noise in anchorages, generator security (sitting in my dinghy or on a beach we are backed into) and carbon monoxide poisoning (why the generator won't be running aboard). So an inboard/flip a switch option would be awesome!
Thanks for sharing your experiences! I wish you all the best in your a/c endeavor!

Here's my .02
& these are the guys I used [stole from] for inspiration: Tahoe Jack & Mark Chamberlain
I pasted this from this previous post. We're the same guys who gave you advice this posting.
But you can get the inspiration & "steal" what you want from those two who did it first
TJ did the AC mods too. For your perusal

Re: Challenge: Anchor washdown and cockpit shower
Gazmn,
Thank you! I had not seen that setup before.
I'm going to study that and lay out some drawings for the M (with it's traveler) versus the X in that setup. I also have to factor in the kid effect of going up/down with the a/c in place!
This was the mod I found here that I was planning on...http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/in ... ?view=1935
Any thoughts on the two styles for an M?
Thanks again for your thoughts and help!

Re: Challenge: Anchor washdown and cockpit shower
The M is a great boat. But there's a lot going on in that companionway. I like that mod. I've seen it before & it works for the M companionway. But if you look up his mods, he reworked his AC. If I were you I'd PM him & pick his brain - which you may already be in the process of.
That's a great thruway mod. Reminds me of Jacks. I love the Billy Box AC but that won't work here. I did it but haven't really used it. Not much need up north here. The issue is the generator noise at night.
Welcome to the process

Re: Challenge: Anchor washdown and cockpit shower
Here are a few pictures of my free standing dual hose AC install.
This is the louver unit for the two hoses (intake and exhaust) that leaves the majority of the companionway open

Here is the AC unit behind the galley - the space is never used. I made a platform above the cushions to tie it down to.
The louver unit grabs onto the port side companionway hatch guide. I made a second pair of Plexiglas companionway boards to fit.
Can easily enter and exit the boat - just not sure how well it will cool down the boat though. Bought the two hose unit to keep the cooling cycle isolated from the cabin air.

Re: Challenge: Anchor washdown and cockpit shower
Thanks guys!
"The process" is alive and well!
I think I looked at the model (or a similar one) that you are using RobertB. In my case, our galley is semi-fixed in the middle of it's normal fore/aft path on the M (via re-drilling a hole for the release pin in the hardpoint between the two aft top storage access points) to accommodate a 5 day cooler (family of 5 onboard) and the cushion across from the head.
So as you go from bow to stern, we have the cushion immediately astern of the v-berth (8 yr old boy bed/girls in v-berth), then a large (4-5' long) cooler, then the galley. The sink of the galley is just usable, the counter space to the left is under the overhang.
I think your method could still work (though not sure about the hose angle being too sharp (?) or hoses blocking use of the galley area (?)), but we use the space for your a/c unit to store fins (3.5'long), speargun, mast raising system, 2x sleeping bags and weekend luggage and use the other 2/3 of berth to sleep in (2 adults).
What do you think space-wise, galley usage, hose angle?
How do you power your unit?
Thanks for the conversation guys! Still figuring this project out!

Re: Challenge: Anchor washdown and cockpit shower
My galley is fully aft.
I needed to use the extension hose set.
Mine is intended to power off AC shore power but I have experimented with a Honda EU2000 generator.
Our arrangement from port bow to stern is a Dometic electric cooler, about 6 foot of sofa, the galley fully aft, then the AC unit.

Could the EU2000 start it?RobertB wrote:My galley is fully aft.

Yes, the EU2000 could start it - but there was not much to spare. Really only workable on shore power with the high load on the generator. And the noise!

Re: Challenge: Anchor washdown and cockpit shower
Can I ask what model of Wynter you have (if you know) and what the BTUs are? We aren't going to install AC on our boat permanently, but it would be nice to know what we could do the two or three weeks a year when it makes sense.RobertB wrote:Yes, the EU2000 could start it - but there was not much to spare.
