My system does NOT have a monitoring gauge. Since I routinely (every month if just docked with occasional use, weekly, if in full time use) place a package of enzyme treatment into the tank by unscrewing the top and looking in, you can tell if the tank is filling up and head for a pump-out station as needed. After a while, you get a sense of how long you can go with what level of usage and check as needed, if getting close to being full. My experience with actual gauges for "black water tanks" as they are called in RV lingo, is that the gauges are notoriously "gummed up" with effluent despite one's best efforts at keeping them clean and are, essentially unreliable.Does your set-up have some sort of tank level monitor or how do you determine when it's time to pump out?

Re: When duty calls
We installed a solar powered fan (Nicro?) by cutting a hole in the head window . This seems to help a lot in keeping the head ventilated .
Two adults using our pot with the 5 gallon holding tank means pumping it out about once a week . The nice thing about our pot being portable , is that we can put it on our little handcart and take it up to the RV dump station , when a marine pumpout isn't available . On the Alabama river , there is one pumpout in 305 miles of river . Its located in Montgomery on the river front . We and the Harriet II (replica riverboat) are the only two boats that appear to be using it .

Porta-potties are versatile for year round use... even at the cabin during off season!!
