Would like to see comments by anyone who has run the main halyard all the way to the stern by using stanchion mounted blocks. I like the idea of raising the main from seated at the steering wheel, but not having all that line interfere with passenger seating.

Jane..welcome to the Forum!
I'll find and link to the "Colonel King" mod which user c130king did to make a continuously looped halyard for bring the main up from the cockpit without spaghetti.
I'm putting it on my boat this spring, as well as the same for my jib.

Short of the King mod, the halyard led to the companionway is plenty long enough to grab and bring back to the helm, if so-inclined. Housekeeping is always in order in the cockpit, and all lines should be coiled or flaked and secured so you're not tripping over them in the cockpit, especially halyards, since once the sail is raised, the halyard tail just sits there doing nothing (unlike sheets, which are worked). Many folks toss them into the cabin, in fact. If there are passengers, raising the main and cleaning up the cockpit can be a good job for them, or at least handing you the halyard so you don't have to leave the wheel. I leave the wheel all the time for that sort of thing, as it's only a step away to grab the halyard and bring it back to the helm.
But the King mod certainly sounds like something worth trying. I may give it a go this summer, just for the heck of it. A downhaul can be nice when the slides aren't playing nice.

i have a pair of blocks between the mast and the gunwale- mounted to the deck- but right close to the gunwale.
it runs my halyard and my daggerboard lifting line back to the winch/cockpit.
iam going to make small rope bags that clip to the stanchions in the cockpit- for halyards and head sail furling line etc. i want to extend my boomvang control line back to the cockpit now
