Per the post earlier in this thread, has anyone found the 'official' rules for what is legal in the Great Lakes? especially the Canadian side? I've had plans to get out on Lake Erie, but after the subject has come up in this thread, I'm now concerned about the legal requirements for the head.

Can't say for other lakes, but the porta potty poleece in Lake Ontario, are going strong. We have our first pump out installation to bore through for our next extended event. Americans may receive a warning for good behavior. Canucks will have to ante-up up front.

Don't intend to hijack this thread but have a question. Does anyone make a porta potty for those with a butt larger than a catelope? Has any of these waste engineers ever looked at the back side of those that seriously want to use their product? How much more would it cost for one that fits? Real PIA!

my x came with what i thought was just a regular porta-potty ,but when i was cleaning out the boat i saw a inline mas. pump ,ive never seen anything like it .was this ever legal ,it didnt have a normal pump out at all ,it was just pumped out through a hole alittle above the water line ?

Many models come configured with a pour spout OR with a pump out connection with remote vent connection. Afaik, they're not interchangeable, but the Canadian rules say something about being permanently connected, and I believe the MSD version qualifies. I don't think I want to take the chance of a fine so I think I'll start shopping around for a new one.

A good example of law makers not considering what they are doing. So they require you to have a pumpout plumbed to your little porta-pottie. Now you have been out 3-4 days and a storm pins you down for another couple and the tank on the porta-pottie is full. What is one going to do? Either unhook the porta-pottie and dump it or go in a bucket and throw it overboard. I'll bet that happens. If they had bags on board they could stay out without a problem.

So true. Seems so often these laws with good intentions are not thought out well. Boaters seem to be a good target. Boaters shouldn't be dumping, but porta potties and your bags can be an inexpensive and simple solution to depending on pump out services.

You have to wonder if the effort made to enforce all these laws are worth it. I hear stories of being boarded with primary concern being inspecting the boats plumbing. Maybe the fines help pay for the enforcement, but is the environmental impact of handful of violators really that bad? When you compare the 200 billion liters of raw sewage Victoria dumps into the sea each year or the 27 billion gallons of raw sewage dumped into NY harbor, are these boats really doing that much damage?

You can always just pick up a $10 toilet seat lid for a 5 gal bucket. They are almost full size and have a gasket that keeps them sealed when clipped shut. Swap that for a screw top if you need to haul it out of the boat at the end of a trip and its sealed and easy to carry.

I hear you, Its been long known that the lower Chesapeake bay is dying from the commercial chicken farms and little is done about it. MMM chicken... Its estimated more waste is flushed by the farms on the eastern shore than a city of 4 million people could produce every year. Straight into the bay, lets swim!
