I put a voyager compass on top of my pedestal and love it. I single hand mostly and cannot imagine wanting it anywhere else. Why cut a big hole in your bulkhead and mess up the backrest if you don't have to? Also it is very easy to get relative bearings and also find when to tack to clear obstacles with it at the helm. I don't use the sunshade on mine so the whole top of the compass is visable from anywhere in the cockpit.

Evidently you single-hand from behind the helm?
If you were sitting at either winch seat ..... it wouldn't work for you?

Yes, Pouw, that was on the boat when we bought it. I had to raise it when I mounted the GPS on top. I moved the lower mounts to the upper holes and drilled some new higher ones. Hope it doesn't give the mainsheet too much leverage on the pedestal. I plan to use the now unused lower holes to mount a sheet bag.

Nope, when sailing I almost always sit to the side. The compass I installed has the card visable on top all the way around. I guess we all have different preferences for compass types and locations. For me it is really nice to have it at the helm where I can sight over it. Makes it really easy to see when to tack to clear an object. Just wait till you have a 100 degree clearance (or a tad more) to tack and it is a pretty good indication that you can tack and clear the obstacle.
