That DOES sound like an outboard engine...which doesn't make sense to have the crankshaft vertical in a boat where you need it horizontal.
Jet drive?

ahem...
I'm thinking that if you're going to try to re-sell the carcasse as a fixer-upper, you'll need to leave the mast, as I'd suspect nobody would want a rotting corpse with nothing on it to rebuild it with.
Otherwise you might need to just take what you need/want off of it, mast included, and strip it of anything stainless/bronze/copper etc. for salvage value and then drag the fiberglass/wood corpse to the dump, begging and pleading with them to take it off your hands (less the trailer, which you can resell for a hundred or two).
Not sure where you're located, but if the stern rails (rear part of the fence) doesn't fit your Venture because of the size difference between the two boats, I might make you an offer on them, as I've been considering adding that type of arrangement to my 26 (which might be larger than your Venture). Depends on distance and such, but just planting the seed.

I'm still waiting for an expert to chime in to see if the mast can fit the venture (with slight mods maybe)
The motor looks like an outboard that has been squashed down....there is a powerhead under the cockpit, with two plugs on the aft and a flywheel on top...underneath the boat there is a small Fixed Lower Unit in front of the rudder. It has what looks like a brass 3 blade prop (not sure if its brass...I'll have to look closer)
It all looks Factory.....
I am located in Wake Forest NC
However I am pretty sure i will be able to get the stern rails and etc to fit

Dave...you are at a huge tipping point in your decision tree
One you remove the stanchions or rigging....you have a 28 foot unwanted carcass ...
Call the local muni dump and find out what the disposal cost for this carcass will be ...I'm guessing of order 300-400 USD
This might change the financials on this deal
I'm thinking part out the motor, sell the sail drive motor, clean up the hull, launch and check for flotation, and sell hull
Net about 2000 total. Buy new mast, pocket 400-500

Yeah, but i bought it FOR the rigging and stanchions...I don't need a new mast, but considering my earlier mast step oops post if this mast will work i WILL keep it as a spare.... As well as the Rolling Jib thing if it will work...Louis will be over later to look at this one...All the Stays are brand new so they are definitely going to the Venture..
I also want the trailer, and I only have $400 in this whole thing...so I really can't lose
As far as paying for the local dump not hardly

the Power of Criagslist will yield someone who wants it....Depending on what the motor is worth and what it is I will offer the Hull for $200 obo sans trailer... .and If I yield nothing from that I will post it in the "Free" section, and someone will most assuredly come get it off my hands...
I live in NC... some redneck will take it and turn it into a kids playhouse, a floating dock, a duck blind, or maybe a floating camper
I don't have a lot of time to let it sit here....

So it seems it is an OMC "Sail Drive" It also has a sticker that says "Zephyr " on the side of the airbox...
I am very familiar with old OMC motors...never heard of this one
However being OMC I have little problem believing it would run again with a carb clean

No way!!
That's so funny because I almost posted to ask you to look under the boat and see if there was a bottom end to the drive unit, but thought "no, couldn't be...that'd be ridiculous and everyone would think i was nuts". Well...maybe I should have posted after all!!
On one hand, that's a really neat idea! On the other hand, I can see why there aren't many of them around anymore... But it's still a really neat idea!
I'd toyed with the idea of something just like that already (even a small jet-ski drive unit) but couldn't come to grips with the idea of not being able to tilt it all the way up out of the water...for the cost of a replacement outboard, I can't imagine the trouble of a permanent motor on this boat.
Glad you'll be able to use most of the stuff on the boat, though...hope you're still married when it's all said-and-done!

We've already pulled the mast, rigging, stanchions, lifeline, Bow Pulpit....Tomorrow I pull the rear rail of the "fence"
Then post on Cl for $400 for the hull and motor....write the ad up as a "redneck camper on the water with built in 15 hp motor...
then move on with plans for the venture

Well here in our "home Port" the Admiral is very used to this....
We have a very normal and good relationship, married 16 years...
However she has learned to not even ask when I get a fire under my butt about some new project.
For example when I showed up with the S.S. Crackhouse the other day she had just called and said "where are you"
I said "I'm up the street at neighbors (showing off crackboat) and I'll be there in a minute, and don't be mad when I pull up"
Her response immediately " what did you buy now??"
Pulling the stern-rail off today, some other tidbits and then posting on CL to get rid of her....

Bucaneer? UhUh. Terrible design, poor sailer. Once you strip off what you want consider finding a local Sea Scout base. Donate it to them and take the tax write off. Saves having to part it out. I've seen some amazing restorations done by these kids and you will be serving a good cause. Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old Salt...

Does that mean I don't get the piston return springs?

Great Idea, but I need to sell what I can to get the $400 Principle I borrowed from my buddy
It's going on CL later today...I will post the text of the ad here so you can get a good laugh....
NC is full of rednecks with big dreams....I am sure I can sell it with no mast and a "fixable" motor to some yahoo as a "floating camper"

Just a Dry fit of the Pulpit
Think we should widen the wood spar and put it forward, or where it is?
