Today I removed almost everything, cleaned up the boat, and started to sand it.
What is the material used for the non-slip on top of the boat?
Currently my boat is that baby blue color I see on a lot of the other ones so I think it's almost original.
I plan on painting over it with a matte finish paint, and the rest standard marine glossy finish.
The stuff is difficult to sand, and I don't want to ruin it. For now I'm just trying to clean it up the best I can.

Another thing I forgot to mention, where can I buy a rail for the stern, around the cockpit? I think I have patched up holes like it used to have one installed.

You have to have SS rails like this custom made. Expect to pay 500-1000 USA for a fabrication like this
It is possible to buy them from an old boat and adapt for perhaps half this

Well I got my boat ready for paint. Sanded everything and cleaned it all very well. I bought interlux bright side and am having a problem. I keep getting fisheye in some spots. I'm using a paint gun, and have never had it this bad before. Maybe a previous owner waxed it a lot? How far does wax penetrate? Any thoughts? I paint semi trucks, first time using marine paint. Is there something I should know about marine paint? The thinner I have is what's recommended on the can. Time to Re-sand and try again.

Did you use a wax remover before you sanded?

Did you wipe the boat of with the worst smelling solvent available?
Only time I have a problem with marine paint is if there's wax or oil. Silicon based Protectants are bad too. I painted my hull with interlux bright sides and no problems. It was rolled though.

No I did not use a wax remover, I have a feeling any wax or whatever was used might have penetrated deep. It was only in a few spots. I removed all the paint again and used a more course sandpaper. I do have good solvent and I did wipe it down. Took all day to re-prep it. I will paint again tomorrow. There is some anti fisheye additive I bought I will add to the paint. I put so many hours in its getting frustrating. If it fish eyes again, I don't know what to do. I'll get picks up soon

Be very liberal with the solvent. Your sanding before using it has spread and driven the wax into the gel coat and you may have difficulty getting it all off/out.
Awlgrip wrote:Removal of all surface contamination (waxes, mold release products, dirt, grease, oil and mildew) is imperative to ensure adhesion of the new Awlgrip Systems.
Note: Always clean the surface before sanding. Sanding the surface with sandpaper does not remove wax or other contamination. Sanding spreads the contamination from one area to another. Sanding often melts greases and oils into the surface making it impossible to obtain a clean surface.
Good luck. Perhaps other members have tricks that might help you.

Ok the additive worked, paint looks great. Next week I will finish the rest of the boat hopefully.
What kind of woods are ok to use on a boat. Teak/beech is kinda hard to get, is oak ok?
