Re: Annual Mad Men of Ontario rendezvous III
Thats my boat in the foreground, first time I had a sail up in the inner harbour. It was very busy, the wind was fairly light so I was able to just coast. This is something I would never have attempted a couple of years ago. I guess experience is a confidence builder.
tkanzler, I have a dometic porta potty that can be hooked up to a pumpout but I haven't installed the necessary vents and pipes yet. I trailer sail usually 1-4 nights at a time so I just dump it in a toilet at home or marina if needed. Never had a problem although I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have a pumpout in Great Lakes. It's just not really convenient if you trailer sail. The marine police did check my boat at the launch ramp a couple of years ago but they were just checking for boaters licence and safety eqiupment.

You will not have a problem I've trl'erd my boats around for yrs with a porta pottie , if u were cruising from port to port for the whole summer without trailering u might draw attention as Rocky say's "dreamer" nobodies bothered him or ever bothered me , so bring ur porta pottie & boat of coarse cause we want ur Admiral to be happy & all u married guy's need someone to keep you's in control !!tkanzler wrote:Are there any issues trailering a boat into Canada via Niagara Falls area? Mapquest says it's only 160 miles.![]()
Also, what are the issues with having a porta-potti in Canadian waters? I can leave it home, or in the vee-hick-el, but if the admiral comes with, that's not going to fly. No permanent connection, nor deck pumpout, I'm afraid.
No problem @ the border I think u will need passports though " I'm I right" ? , & if u have any new electronics on the boat u should bring ur receitpes to prove yer bought them USA
Oh Yeh no drugs or big gun's LOL
U will want to cross Niagara either late Thurs or early Fri , we have a couple of members down that way who could chime in on the best border crossing times brian "Seahouse" & or Ross "Crikey" & yes it would be nice to see u guy's & crew their also

Passport, or Enhanced Driver License, which NY State issues. Convenient for folks making frequent crossings and prefer not to have to have a passport with them. Not legal for air travel, even to Canada, but water and land crossings are fine.Highlander wrote:No problem @ the border I think u will need passports though " I'm I right" ? , & if u have any new electronics on the boat u should bring ur receitpes to prove yer bought them USA
No worries there - don't like drugs, even necessary medical ones, and same for guns.Highlander wrote:Oh Yeh no drugs or big gun's LOL
Oh, and the admiral is interested. Probably more interested in Toronto than sailing, but hey, I'll take what I can get.

Passport card is another option for Canada...good for air land and sea.
Incidentally...if you or anyone in your party has a DWI conviction, you may find yourself refused at the border. Plan accordingly.

Hmmm...
Now let me see...
Looking at the title of this thread, I'm not sure, but I just might be... mad enough to qualify!
Well, maybe I'm not fully qualified - but count me in!
See you all there- looking forward to it - the TO boat show meeting was too brief.

Re: Annual Mad Men of Ontario rendezvous III
Hey tkanzler!
A passport will do, if you have one, or other government-issued ID, I expect (but you can’t quote me on it, I’m more familiar going the other way; going to Buff tomorrow AAMOF).
If you (or anyone reading this) might be traveling regularly in the future there’s a thing called a Nexus card that is the most secure form of ID that the average citizen of North America can have.
It requires a thorough background check by both the Canadian and US government, it uses RFID technology (so they know you have it in your car even if it’s in your pocket) and it’s good for 5 years.
Some levels require a retina (or is it iris?) scan, and fingerprinting is done and registered with the FBI. It puts you in the fast lane at airports as well as land border crossings because they know that you’ve been “pre-vetted”. But it’s only usable if each person you are traveling with has one.
And zero tolerance means you can lose it at the drop of a hat for even what might seem to be a ”minor” violation, so you have to know the rules (which they tell you when you apply). Because they can considerably reduce delays and processing times, these are considered to be like gold to anyone who does any regular border crossing (land, sea, air) in the present trans-border security climate.
I think more importantly what you need to be sure of is that you are carrying proper ID to get you back into the US. A citizen of the US cannot be refused entry to the US, but the delay will be establishing that he is, in fact a citizen of the US, if he has no proof of residency or citizenship. I've heard about that happening, since the rules have been tightened up.
Sorry, I cannot answer the porta-potty query; all I know is that my own Mac meets the provincial requirements. And I also know that it might not be too comforting for you to be told that others have been in violation for some time without incident. I’m sure the rules are buried deep within some website somewhere, it’s a matter of finding, and translating them into English (ah, yes, sarcasm).
But with some other issues brought about on these forums previously, I do know that there is a “grace” period for visitors on certain legislations to allow them to vacation for a given period of time, and return, without complying. Which is reasonable. Whether or not this applies to port-potties I don’t know.
The admiral and I plan on attending this event, either with or sans Mac, so I hope to see you there!

Hey Cat!
You’re right about the DWI – it's because it’s considered to be a Criminal Offence in Canada.

Re: Annual Mad Men of Ontario rendezvous III
I found this on the Visitor Information page of Transport Canada's web page. Looks like porta-pottys are out unless permanently connected and equipped for pumpout with vent.
It wasn't easy to find, though it's probably not hard if using the right search terms. Here's the link.

Sewage Restrictions
Help Keep Our Waterways Clean
There are restrictions against pumping sewage into all waters with the province of Ontario and some interior lakes of British Columbia and Manitoba. In these areas, a pleasure craft fitted with a toilet must also be fitted with a holding tank and if fitted with a piping system that allows the discharge of sewage directly overboard, then this discharge must be visibly disconnected. Sewage may only be discharged at shore pump-out facilities.
Portable Toilets
Portable toilets are illegal on Ontario waters.
The owner of a pleasure craft shall ensure that each toilet and the holding tank(s) is/are installed so that;
•The toilet and equipment are connected in such a manner that the equipment receives all toilet waste from the toilet.
•Equipment designed for the storage of human excrement is provided with a deck fitting and such connecting piping as is necessary for the removal of toilet waste by shore-based pumping equipment.
•No means of removal of toilet waste is provided other than the means mentioned above.
•All parts of the system for removal of toilet waste are congruent with one another and the boat.
For more information, consult Division 4 (Sewage) of the Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships and for Dangerous Chemicals.
I think I'll start a thread about this, as folks would have to be looking in the Destinations, etc. room to find it, and it might not be seen unless someone knew enough to look for it there. It's useful information to know.

Re: Annual Mad Men of Ontario rendezvous III
Government issued ID used to be acceptable, but now it's passport or Enhanced Driver License only (NYS issues them - others may, too). A Nexus card is top shelf, but for me, who's only been to Canada once (by boat to Cobourg, in fact) and would only make the infrequent pleasure trip, a passport or EDL is enough. My sons have EDLs because they go to school down the road from border crossings, and the EDL makes it easy for them to cross without risking the loss of a passport, not that college kids would misplace something as important as a passport, of course.seahouse wrote:A passport will do, if you have one, or other government-issued ID, I expect (but you can’t quote me on it, I’m more familiar going the other way; going to Buff tomorrow AAMOF).
