The issue with buying new in the states is that the Mac website clearly states that the warranty is void unless you purchase from an in country dealer. Not as clear about second hand boats, but less worried about warranty then, plus they are still alot cheaper than new.

Maybe someone should drop roger mac a line to point out to him how much his overseas dealers are overcharging kind of goes against his mission statement dont you think.

Well, the warranty doesn't really cover anything that's going to happen anyway

Buy the hull in the U.S., container ship it, and get your Outboard mounted in OZ. Then you've got what you actually need to have covered, covered. I'd be happy to give the hull an inspection at the factory before shipping it from Long Beach.

I decided that was just too much for a Mac and started looking in earnest for a 40'+ motoryacht type boat for between $130,000 and $300,000 for Lake Mead, but Earnest didn't have one - - - actually, he had one but I missed the boat on it So - - - I am still boatless in Las Vegas and here comes Summer

Ya know....? I guess I will blame my beliefs on watching and listening to so many members here for several years ( myself at times included)Who pinched the nickel till the little Buffalo Pooped... and others who threw around quarters like they were manhole covers...that we all, most often went a bit slow an easy on costly accessories.. I thought and I still believe from what I read here that ...The Mac's tend to be the first venture into sailing for many of us. That is, if you dont include for me a 9' Bar Harbor and for others, a number of similar type , tiny sailboats. These are fantastic boats!! I for 1 , am glad Roger presents them as a build as you go. IF it had been a $40,000.00 initial purchase price? We probably wouldn't have ours ..... Once we got up to Bill's ( Boats 4 Sail) in Wisconsin and decided that yes we wanted one, and Bill having walked us gently thru what we might well want to consider adding at the purchase time $$$ the wife still had no qualms when Bill Beers asked " How do you want to precede with the purchase " ....There was no question or hesitation the wife just reached into her purse and pulled out the check book and began writing a check... While Bill and I discussed delivery date and motor selection... If on the other hand Bill dropped the bomb of .. and That will be $42,000.00....we both would have choked up and maybe .... just maybe reconsidered our decision...as it was a couple days later she was writing and mailing another check, this one for $7000 to the Outboard Dealer for purchase and installation of our Mercury 50 HP EFI BF ..I have yet to make what I feel will be the last of my costly ... purchases / installs.. Roller Furler and New sail.. which is sitting up at Bills waiting on me and better weather to arrive and Auto Pilot..
Its been 6 years of steady up grades and purchases and we will land somewhere around $40K at the end..I/we feel our boat is loaded.. I've lived aboard by myself for weeks at a time and with the 2 of us for 6 days and its suitable and very easily do-able and fun.. Not knowing in the very begining that for sure this boat was The Ticket.. for us?? I would have bought something else if it was $40,000.00 + initial cost out the door..

Dive, I agree with you 100% - - - If my 2006 M was $42,000 I would have bought something else, I negotiated every nickel - - - down to the fake phone call to my then wife telling her we couldn't buy the boat because Mike Inmon wouldn't go under $32,000 - - - Mike then got a fake fax from Evinrude (he must have pushed a button under his desk) telling him he was getting an engine special discount which would enable him to put my final price under $32K.

Now I am too old and lazy to do much of anything myself; and just want to lie around in the sun days on a big boat - - - to which I do almost nothing - - - and then maybe go play a little poker at night - - - tough life, but someone's got to do it

I paid $7800 for a 1997 mac.X 3 years ago and after new tandem Aluminum Trailer,sterio system,elect. panels with two house batteries,depth sounder, new head sail, sheetlines,ancor gear,gps, refig.on and on were I am at $14,000.
I have modified the boat were I want it, but still need the auto pilot. So say I have $15,000 into it and after 3 years I don't think I will loose much if I wanted to sell.
I will say this, I love the mac.X and tho many have said it doesn't beat to windward...they really need to know the boat to Sail 45 degrees off the wind and less.

Hi Watto,

I thought i would respond to a few misconceptions about the cost of a new Mac in Australia compared to one in the US. I hope you dont think i am having a go at you as this is not my intention.

Firstly, and in relation to our “Basic Package”, although Blue Reef Yachts call this our basic package it is by no means the same package that is the standard boat that the MacGregor factory offers. Our basic package does come with a 60hp Evinrude Etec motor with a value of over $10,000. This package also comes with close to $8,000 worth of factory and Blue Reef Yachts options that are not included with the standard factory boat.

If I may, I will go through how I justify my prices. For simplicity i will use for our basic package priced at $56,800.

Cost of factory boat $22,900-
Cost of factory options- trailer upgrade, ladder, mast raise etc $2,500-
Cost of packing and shipping etc $4,500-
Import, Customs, Transport costs etc $2,800-
Etec 60HP $10,800-
Blue Reef options/trailer mod/rego/etc $5,000-
GST $5,000-
Total $53,000-

It does dissapoint me when people do a little Internet research and then start claiming that Aussie dealers are robbing our customers. I am not out to make a million, nor to charge excessive prices for our boats. I just want to make a fair wage by providing excellent service and to share this wonderful boat with sailors in Australia. I believe I am doing this fairly and justly and i feel that my customers would agree. I thought it would be very obvious in this day with the Internet offering so much transparency of actual costs of products I doubt we would be selling the number of boats we are currently selling (or any for that matter) unless we were competitive and fair. With respect, maybe a quick phone call or email to me to ask for a justification of my pricing may have been a more constructive method than getting onto the world's most popular Macgregor forum to question my pricing.

Unless things have changed recently any US dealers found to be sourcing Macs for o/s customers and bypassing the official o/s dealers will be struck off so if you are going to buy a new boat and ship it out here don't tell the US dealer.
BTW not sure how what Blue Reefs standard species are but some of Synergys were very desirable and worth the extra cost over some US boats.
To buy my 2006 for $59,000 would represent very good value against a new boat and also against a US boat with similar options by the time it was optioned up or landed here either through a dealer or otherwise

Just over 20 grand out the door

Then bought a 2005 Merc 75 4s used through iboats for $3,299
Installed it myself

So sitting around 24,000 all in

Added a Raymarine autopilot last year +1,000

Still at 25,000 cdn

I feel like I stole it compared to what I am reading here.

Motor has been 100% since day 1
I see like like buying a car
I would buy a used car over a new one any day
The way I see it, a new car becomes used as soon as you drive it off the lot
Still works just as good as it did a few minutes before that

I too Bought my from Bill @ Boats 4 Sail and Was and AM Still Very happy with the price I paid and the services and advice I received..
I was really a brand New Sailor and Bill did me right I feel... to this day.. He took me out sailing 3 times..Once just him and I Once my oldest grandson and I and Once my wife and I..
I dont know if i.boats was even selling motors yet, at the time I bought my boat, but they seem to be The Ticket Now! IMHO from everything I have read on a couple of Boat Boards anyway.. You got a larger motor for less than half of what I paid .. and now thanks to you and others we have a pictorial right here on this board about, How to install an Outboard on a Mac..I bought and never used a few things in the very begining.. I was warned by Bill and the members here .. Like many? Well maybe at least a few others .. I was rather excited about my new purchase and should have waited.. No Big Deal really .. maybe $100 in useless stuff still sitting in my garage..
One was a mast top wind indicator.. Humm Mast rotates ( ya moron ) on the M.... so I ask ya ?? Just what do you really think that thing is going to do for you?
