Chefmike is right. The hull Number is drilled into a stringer under the cockpit. My 71 222 was the same way.

I believe the HIN system went into effect for hulls built after November 1 1972. You might have a hull number before this date, but they weren't required.
Altering removing defacing a HIN is a crime btw,

Well this is an interesting thread. My 73 had the poptop, the front window, the hatch, lazarette, dinette and motor mount. A tricked out girl in her day! Also has the drilled hin in the stringer. I got rid of the pop top and made a higher built on roof. The windows i sealed with silicon ten years ago and they still are sealed.

I confirmed the Mov 72 HIN rule on CFR
I wonder if your hull was first laid down in 1972 Ixneigh? Anything after June 72 would have been a 73 model year btw.
Of cour, following obscure federal laws wasn't big in 1972 either.

Here is a pic of where I found my Hull number, 1972 V2-22, pop top, outboard cut out, no forward window.

I just picked up a Venture 222 and see the HIN on the stringer. However, it's a bit vague as to what I'm looking at. Looks like it might be something like 1P01. Does that make any sense with what others on this post have found? I thought the HIN usually indicated manufacturer and year built as a minimum. Thanks, Greg

Um, actually, I meant manufacturer and series number, not year built.

Still trying to figure out the HIN. As stated before, if you look at it from the direction of the arrow in the picture above (from the port side), it looks like 1P01. If you look at it from the starboard side, it looks like 1091. The latter looks more like a HIN, but it doesn't really make sense that they would have made it read from the starboard side since you can't really get on that side to read it. Any one else with a Venture 222 that can tell me their HIN so I know if I'm on the right track? Thanks.

Mines something like 737.
Guess there was a time when they were serious about boat ID.
No way to remove or deface them unlike today. I believe it is read from the starboard side. They drilled it before the deck pan was put in place probably.

maybe you're reading iP01 from the backside. turn it around and it reads 1091. Just a guess??? 1091 is about the right number for that year. Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Okay, thanks for the replies. I'm guessing from Ixneigh's HIN that mine is 1091. Now on to my next question: any way to tell from the HIN the year this boat was made? Don't have any title or paperwork on the boat.

Try contacting MacGregor in Costa Mesa, Ca. They might have a record of the hull # and the year it was built?? Fair Winds and Full Sails....
