One of THE BEST $1,200.00 bills I EVER SPENT (and includes airfare). I picked up the surveyor at the airport first thing this morning and took him directly to the boat where the owner met us. I departed and left him alone. Late this morning he called me to pick him up and I knew something was wrong when he was waiting on the shore for me and not on the boat. We printed out his report from his laptop to my printer. Here are some of the negative items from the summary of his report, which came after the stuff I didn't understand like compression ratios, voltage and amperage numbers:
This craft has been recently cosmetically altered, but has NOT been maintained; ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BUY!
Although the engines look good; they have just been steam cleaned and both need substantial repairs; I suspect because of neglect. The hour meters have been altered and placed back in their slots incorrectly. The engine bildge contains liquid oil. (Note from Rick - - I had looked in the bildge and saw NO OIL - - - but the owner probably cleaned out the oil for my visit and then when we started the engines Monday and today the oil reappeared and he forgot to clean up inbetween).
I started the Kohler 12kw generator and it hardly put out any power. It should probably be replaced.
The air conditioning does not blow cold enough for your heat. I have no idea what the problem is but the system needs work. I measured the temperatures of air coming out of several vents at around 71F. It should be much colder.
I didn't bother testing the hull after I discovered the problems with the engines and generator; however, I think there is hull damage as if the craft hit something. I inspected the outside of the fore hull from the dock; and a very professional repair job has been done, although I can tell a very slight difference between the color of the hull there and amidship? I also didn't bother to take the craft out of it's slip.
I could not get the Raymarine radar to operate. It turns on but does not operate.
The owner told me several blatant lies during my inspection; to which I just nodded and said nothing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a small world - - - the surveyor told me he is sure he saw this boat in Marina Del Rey in 2005 & 2006 (I wondered why it had freshwater washdown and a few other items meant for Ocean boats). So the owner lied to me when he said this boat has always been on Lake Mead.
It looks like I will escape this trap cheaply enough. When we wrote the sales contract the other day (and I wrote it) the owner wanted $10,000 down (which actually was reasonable), but since I was going to take possession of the boat Saturday and pay him with a certified check which I would arrange for him to take to my bank and distribute where he wanted; I talked him into a $1,000.00 deposit and gave it to him in cash.
I have a feeling I am going to have difficulty getting my deposit back even though the contract clearly calls for it's return if the survey is negative - - - but even if I never get it back - - - I feel like I made the great escape here! WHEW!
Let this be a lesson to all of us! This boat looked pristine to me; but the surveyor gave it a "DO NOT BUY". Most of you are better than I at determining whether boats are good or not; but all of us are capable of being duped if we don't take proper precautions. Believe me, I think that someone (unfortunately) may wind up getting shafted on this boat! Naturally, I am very dissapointed that the boat turned out to be not what I thought - - - but I am THRILLED to have escaped an almost $300,000 trap!
Rick
PS So the search for flotation continues.
PPS In response to a post above somewhere - - - we never intended to live on this boat - - - we have two homes we bought when we moved here - - - a cheap one in Henderson that we live in and an expensive one in Summerlin we bought as an investment. However, we probably would have thrown a few parties from time to time on the boat (poker players love to party; as do boaters)!
