When I read the blog on how her engine went out, and she made a new fuel pump from something like a bilge pump, i realised she had the 'right stuff' You go, Jessica.

Thats interesting I thought one of the "rules" was that the motor was not to be used, maybe I'm thinking of something else.
My major concern was her being alone for so long but this was unfounded as she was in almost constant contact to the point of overload with bloggers etc I understand she even picked up a special (boy) friend on the way.
I agree though good on her and hope she uses it to best advantage, I understand she is now going to circumnavigate Aust but she has already seen the worst of it in the Southern ocean.
She's gamer than me but then I would really not be interested in sailing non stop for seven months.
Her parents have done an amazing job from home schooling and restrictions on TV etc to giving her the sailing and life skills to handle not only the voyage but the press effotlessly since then she is much more mature in many ways than her age.

I believe she only used the motor occasionally to assist in charging the batteries when either the sun or the wind or both did not cooperate. On May 10th, Jessica wrote:

we've pretty much had no wind at all the last two days, so the batteries were lower than I'd thought.

I think it is considered OK to use the motor for charging as long as it is not used for propulsion.

I think you are right on the engine for charging....by extension, you can use a generator for electricity of course.
