I may be able to help with the shuttle. I cant go the whole trip but I should be around at the end. I could get your rig from SB, and drive it down to meet you at LB. IF you still have the 4 door truck you could drive everyone north to SB on your way home, dropping me off at oxnard, them at SB, and your northbound to home. Let me know if this will work.

I guess you're right about Scorpion, there were those little islets in that anchorage. However, my night at Prisoner's was vastly rougher. Guess that's a good example of how positioning within an anchorage might affect comfort. I was only slightly outside of you and Ernest, but it was very rough all night long.

I'll have my truck in LB so I can take a few back up to SB.

Ill be sailing up from Oceanside a day early and leave LB with Dave. I wont be any help getting people up to SB but it will be one less to shuttle. It sounds like it will be a great trip and I cant wait. The only bad part of the Ensenada trip was the wait and it seems like we are in for the same here. Ill try to get Len to come to be the official photographer.

Hello, I am new to the Macgregor family and anchored in San Diego. If I joined in I guess it would be best to trailer up to where ever you decide to leave from.

I would like to be on your list. I can get the time off work but I am not sure I could get a crew that could go out that long and being new I
really don't want to sail alone but I want to keep the idea open.

If you want or feel comfortable, you can meet me at Oceanside and we can follow eachother. I guess it depends on how much time you have. I can launch at Dana Landing if you want and we can sail up from there. Either way is fine with me. I motored from Oceanside to Catalina and used about 16 gals of fuel. I have a 50 hp. two stroke. We were loaded with two teenagers and me. What size motor do you have and what crew size your planning on taking? I don't think fuel will be a problem because there are two or three places to fuel up on the way.

I would love to make part of the trip with everyone! My wife and I along with our two kids would leave from Oxnard and then most likely cut back home to Oxnard while the group continues past Anacapa headed to Catalina. What a Great Family summer vacation! Does anyone have any problems with us joining the group with two kids (6 and 7)? We are by no means experienced sailors but would love the oportunity to make the trip with a group.

I will keep checking the thread for updates.

So how many boats are in at this time?

I editted the original first post to recap where we are to date. I can do that from time to time so we don't have to dig thru a load of posts to figure what is current info. If I left anything out or got anything wrong, let me know.

Jim F, Welcome and we would love to have you along. I did a couple similar trips single handed and may do this one single as well. I'll be leaving from Long Beach (my home port and where I'll meet Tim Z) so that is another option for you. although if you'd like to trailer up to SB, that would work to. We should have a trailer shuttle plan worked out by then.

Kevin, It would be great to see you again. I was hoping Francis would make out again as well.

As for fuel...After leaving Santa Barbara (city), there won't be any fuel until we get to Two Harbors, Catalina. That should be about 5 days later. With that said, I only plan on leaving Santa Barbara with ~18 gallons and sailing most of the trip.

I will have made several overnight trips by the departure date, but can I bother the group to share some of their thoughts about what gear you would think is necessary and what gear would be desired to have on this type of trip. I have about a year to get ready, so I wanted to start putting together my wish and need list.

This trip is a little like a wilderness backpack, since there are zero commercial facilities on our first three islands - Sta Rosa, Sta Cruz, Sta Barbara.

We need to have enough water, provisions and fuel aboard when we leave Sta Barbara (city) to last the 5 days until we reach Catalina. Fortunately, we have sail power for this generally downwind transit. Food, water and cooking fuel are individual choices, but shouldn't be too difficult to stow. It's probably impractical to stow enough fuel to motor the entire trip . . . practice sailing!

As to equipment (acquiring "things" for the cruise), I've added a basic list onto page one of the thread.

Oops, that was the extended trip! It should be fixed now.

I'm back, after quite a hiatus. I picked up three new crewmembers, although one is a bit small to heave around on sheets and halyards (4 weeks).

As it looks right now I'm set to go in July. I'm hoping everyone is raring to go. The oil rigs make great way points or rendezvous or even marks if anyone gets displaced or lost.

The National Park Service at Ventur Harbor is a great place to pick up some wonderful literature on the Channel Islands and the rangers are great resources. I should have listened to them last time.

I might also recommend getting passes so we can go ashore and explore the islands as well as there is a great amount of history on the Channel Islands including fossils of Pygmy Mastodons.

A great book to read up on the islands is called "Diary of a Sea Captains Wife." A chronicle of the early years of the Channel Islands circa 1910.

Should we plan on a meeting in the spring to start hammering out some of the details? I'd be up for a couple of hours for a meeting someplace convenient in the LA area.
