The first step is to get past your anger. It is not as if this is not a known situation, as you should have discovered by doing research before your purchase. You say that you would have been willing to pay extra for a higher quality trailer, so buy that trailer now. You can sell your current trailer for a good price and you will essentially be out nothing. As to the Mac bump to get the boat farther forward, it is a maneuver that is in the Mac manual.

I've seen all kinds of boats at the ramp use the "Mac Bump" to get their boats all the forward on their bunk trailers. It's not something Mac specific and has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the trailer (not that I'm arguing the mac trailer is high quality). It is simple geometry. When the trailer is sitting on a sloped ramp and the boat is floating on the level water even though you winch the boat fully into the bow vee block, when the trailer is pulled out the boat settles onto the lower bunks and in the process lifts the bow leaving a gap between the bow and the block. The steeper the ramp, the bigger gap you end up with. If your bunks are slick enough you can winch the boat up (we use liquid rollers spray), but it is just as easy to do the bump. It takes about 5mph forward motion and a couple of light taps on the brakes, no need to leave rubber on the parking lot.

I will seriously pay fair market value for his trailer if he were local.

He, I, and many others would pay more for a better trailer.. but many more would not. Trust me, the quality of the steel trailer doesn't blow wind up my skirt..trust me!!

Still the only question I have seen in 2 pages is 'is it legal to use the mac trailer'.. The answer still is yes in the usa.

If there truely is a safety issue.. open a complaint with the DOT, what code is being violated? I know (as mentioned before) many countries won't allow the mac trailer on their roads (ie austrailia) but they are legal here. If there is a code violation. report it. I am sure roger knows all the rules and makes the trailer to just be good enough to pass.

Plus, on another note, a very positive way to introduce yourself to a forum community!

I KNOW I said those exact words (or close to it ) on this forum more than once. I have complained up and down about the quality, fit and finish of the boat, but I knew all about the trailer when I got it.. what a POS it is.. It is what it is...but the aluminum one is 10x better than the steel one.

I wish they did offer an upgrade too! They don't. So we have to deal with it. Sell yours (it will sell very fast im sure) and get a semi custom one made. You won't be the first!

What would you do if the frame your car would start to twist and bend and fall apart, after such a short period of time and utilisation ?

You have to design and produce at a minimum standard of quality if you want to keep doing business in this very competitive world … which is far the case for the MacGregor aluminium trailer.

I am sure that I am not the only one on the planet to address that problem. MacGregor has the knowledge of it and should take the appropriate measures to correct it and preserve his reputation.

Seems to me that the trailer actually does meet minimum standards of quality, at the very least. It's not exactly "falling apart," at least not in the picture posted above. "Short period" is also underdetermined. What is it? One hour? One week? My trailer is 10 years old and is only beginning to fall apart. I'm still using it.

MacGregor's reputation does not rely on the quality of the trailer. He's not into trailering business. His reputation is largely due to the balance between price and features offered, by striking the appropriate compromise of many variables: sails versus engine, weight versus room, ease of handling versus convenience, quality versus price. The trailer is one variable among many. One gets what one pays for. One wants more, one pays more--and gets an upgraded aluminum trailer. Or beefs up the existing one, for one's own peace of mind.

Yep, you're not the only one complaining about the quality of the trailer. In the other camp, there are thousands who use it gleefuly and thank their lucky stars that they have it at all, at that price. The law of competition gives a clear upper hand to the latter.

I can't see where you come from in your profile which is a pity.
If it is Ca (Southern) then I will give you $1,500 for your alloy trailer, and you can move on to a trailer that you are more content with immediately.
The 'other-half' of my operation also has a larger engineering business, and one of their special-ities are custom boat trailers, so we could do you some sort of trade.

With the Macs I export from your country, if the trailers are not in tip-top condition, we are going to swap them out for those excellent designed and engineered Mac Alloy trailers.
Just assembled one yesterday.....I get in a mobile mechanic these days.....he is ex-military (attached to Armoured Corps)...
and his comments....
"What a beautiful trailer. Trust the f*#*'n Yanks to come up with something as good as this!"
