Propane tank safety

You can use propane tanks safely below with some prudence. The explosive limit for Propane in air mixture is between roughly 2-9% by volume (source Praxair MSDS E-4646 F)

The scenario where the small amount of gas that is released when you pop off the tank could reach an explosive ratio is difficult to imagine.

We use a stainless Steel dual burner propane in galley - tanks are stored in a ziplock in a fuel locker and only brought down for cooking.

At shore with power available, Ive always found a hotplate and hotpot the way to go!

Keep in mind that the escaped gas will be heavier than air and will collect in the bilge of the boat. Over time the volume of escaped gas could build up. Perhaps this is an unlikely scenario that it could reach a danger point, but you would only have to be wrong once!
