Blisters!

The link to Nigel Klegg's article on Osmotic action was like finding the Bible on this problem. He even says boats with color infused in the hulls are even more prone to blistering. It is caused by incomplete curing during layup, and could come from inside the ballast tanks just as easily.

We slip our Mac X, I keep the ballast tank empty, assuming "in tank" blisters could occur. The Mac rides hi and dry in her slip, and it works fine in our 'wind protected' marina.

Looks a little like ours.

I apologize in advance if it has already been mentioned here, page 20 of the manual says "If the boat is left in the water (either fresh or salt water), apply a top grade of anti-fouling bottom paint with an 18 mil think (.018) epoxy under coat. Without good bottom paint and epoxy primer, the white gel coat exterior surface may blister." The PO left it in the water 2 years for 9 months at a time without either bottom paint or epoxy prime.

I did spend over an hour with a very knowledgeable rep from West systems talking about the issue. Bottom line, he said if I plan to trailer, it should not get any worse (and hasn't), put my favorite wax on it, get it in the water, enjoy it and for get about them. If I decide to slip it to do what has already been talked about, sand, epoxy primer and paint and forget about them.

Great post Scottie, There are some really ugly bottoms in his articles. I'm glad my 98 is still looking great. One thing for sure, when I had my inspected by Cheryl at Blue Water Yachts in April after I purchased her, she said my hull was in great shape and she had a newer used on a trailer that was on consignment, I believe, and it had a recent repaint that was already in bad shape She said it wasn't done by somebody she would recommend. If you have to re-do your hull finish it pays to have it done correctly and not cut corners You gets what you pays for
