Now that is much clearer
If the factory did it, the cost of the Mac would go up a couple of hundred bucks.

"Something like this should be done at the factory," I agree... and also maybe a built in multiple wire harness for accessories...but then, don't forget...the

's are built to a price...and a marlin board...Roger has my plan...and a bowsprit...and a...and a...and a...

I've had the same problem. I saw a mod where someone carpeted the inside of the hatch including the part that contacts the deck when sliding. He said it worked well. The velcro idea seems similar but won't sand still get between the velcro and the gel coat and wear it out?

I don't know, time will tell.
It can't be any worse than the friction there from the factory.
I do know that there is vertical room to fully wrap the lip with velcro, top and bottom, instead of just the corners being doubled up as I have done.
In retrospect, a full "wrap" may help to hinder any grit from finding it's way to the sliding areas.
So far, it still feels swweeeeet to open and close the hatch!
Almost like high quality drawer slides.
(It dosen't take much to blow up my skirt, and this mod did).

I'm wondering how it would work to put the velcro on the gelcoat instead of the sliding hatch? A disadvantage would be that it would have to be longer to extend forward and may not hold up in the elements but there would be no direct contact with the deck gel coat.

If your use is like mine, the gel coat on the deck is long gone in some areas.
Perhaps if you were starting out with a brand new boat ------.
I'd still put it on the hatch though.
