And for anyone else tinkering...I supported the free end of the boom by the large (brass) snap hook on the topping lift. The padeye on the end of the boom holds what I would best describe as a “spool” fixed to it. It doesn't have to rotate, it slips freely on the hook.

The hook clips onto the middle of the spool and allows the boom to rotate, while still supporting it. The crank handle, which is convenient, but complicates its utility slightly (and so I haven't often bothered with it, it does violate the KISS principle), was attached outboard to the spool. A handle (12” aluminum pipe with a clearance hole at one end for the crank axle) was mounted between the spool and crank to steady the whole thing while cranking.

-B.

This thread is so long, and my memory so short, I hope I haven't repeated myself on any of this. :D

The one I made is just exactly the same as the stock goosneck, except imagine if the stock goosneck was two pieces that could rotate from each other. That's what I have.
I just wanted to update this as my mod goosneck was a total complete failure. I wanted to let you all know. I have posted pictures on another blog here on the site.

Maybe seahouse will help me make a good one, because I seem to be no good at all at this.

Interesting...so this rolls the mainsail around the boom? I might be interested in this!
