Is that when we hired a bunch of people from NZ to drive our boat, added one egomaniacal American, and proclaimed victory for USA?

No mention of the NZ and I watched it on the internet and if it's on the internet it must be true.Catigale wrote:Is that when we hired a bunch of people from NZ to drive our boat, added one egomaniacal American, and proclaimed victory for USA?
I'm about half way through this book; it's great. A sad tale about huge egos killing many sailors. Picked up the book at a discount outlet called Ollies Outlet in Johnstown, PA for about $4.00 - money well spent.Herschel wrote:Couldn't find a quote to build on, and this is a book, not a movie, but I found I could not put this book down once I started it. It is a fascinating, often sad, but, also, inspiring. It is the story of Admiral Halsey's 3rd fleet encounter with a typhoon in the middle of WWII in the Pacific. The story gives insight about the limits of weather forecasting during that time in history, and the compromises made in ship mod design during a time of war. The personal heroism of some ship captains, and the corresponding sheer stupidity of others are, also, on display. Turned out I have been sitting in front of a survivor of that encounter at church for the last ten years and didn't even know it. Heartily recommend this book.

Appreciate your taking a chance on the book. You'll find some positives toward the end; still a sobering read, though.Y.B.Normal wrote:I'm about half way through this book; it's great. Boat, you guys have it made. If you fall overboard without a bright colored PFD or clothing, you still have a nice light "dome" showing that the Coasties can zero in on. The rest of us dark haired guys are goners in that scenario. They'll never see us. Count your blessings; you are destined to be an old bald sailor, and I suspect, a rather bold one, too.BOAT wrote:sailboatmike wrote:As the old saying goes, "There are old sailors and bold sailors, but you wont find an old bold sailor" a very true saying

Who knows? "The Donald" might give them an edge!sailboatmike wrote:Well the US team need a token American to go with all the New Zealanders and Aussies. Maybe Donald Trump is available, would be a shame if he went MOB without a lifejacket, not sure the search and rescue would search and rescue to hard though
