We have started having a problem with our 150 genoa in fairly high winds when tacking. As the sail starts to sweep across the upper shroud the plastic piece at the lower back part of the sail catches on the shroud. The sail continues to go across the boat as the wind catches it then we end up with the sail full of wind but stretched across the boat which does bad things to the handling. The only way to clear it is to climb up on the cabin and pull it loose. The fact that it happens in higher wind makes things even worse from a control standpoint since the wife has to take the wheel while I go forward. She doesn't steer that much and I don't like the boat being out of control with a sail that won't do right.
What I did to fix the problem was to disconnect the two upper shrouds and run them through a piece of white 3/4" PVC that is about 5 feet long. I had a three foot piece on originally to protect the sheets as they went across but it was too low to prevent the back of the genoa from hanging up. We haven't taken the boat out since I made the change but I assume that it will cure the problem. Has anyone else had this problem and what is the "right" way to fix it??
Sounds like that 'plastic piece' is a reinforcing board for the clew. It should not be lifted enough to catch on shrouds. Seems like the Genoa deserves a little R&R.
Edit to Add: I guess I meant Repair or Rework; or, more commonly R&M (maint).

Try letting the Genny sheet go a bit earlier before you tack. Let the Genny flap a bit so its out away from the shrouds, then start your tack, while steadily pulling in on the opposite sheet, nice and easy or you will stall, keep it graceful for best results. I have found anything too quick or abrupt can kill your speed, cause a stall, then you will have to back off and start beaming to bring her back to a point again.
[quote="baldbaby2000"]I'm not sure what the plastic piece is: maybe the leechline cord cleat?
I guess it is probably the cord cleat. I would need to pull the sail out and look at it again. We have been working to increase our comfort level with the genoa with winds in the teens so the thing hanging up has been a frustration. Since it only hangs up on one side my guess is that the edge is bent out away from the sail producing an edge to catch. The last time out we got run off the lake with a big storm blowing in so we just stowed the genoa in the cabin, dropped the mast and drove away.
I think my pvc over the shroud will cure the problem no matter how bent up the piece may be.
