Loose Window Screws

Post by Duane Dunn, Allegro »

I just completed a mod to add curtains for my wife. The rod brackets used the same machine screws that hold the windows in. Once the white covers are removed and the nut is off you can remove the clear backing plate and then attach the brackets.

I was suprised to find that almost every nut was loose. Macgregor used the poor mans lock nuts (No nylocks here), they put on the nut then cut the screw to bugger up the threads and keep the nut from backing off. Everything still seemed well sealed with the black caulk and I haven't had any leaks, but it would seem like this would be something to check every now and then.

I had my son outside handling the screwdriver while I did the inside nuts and brackets. The best thing was while we were doing the curtains, my wife was under the boat on a creeper waxing the bottom. What a deal.

Great, now I'm going to be looking at those windows everytime the boat shakes! Quit poking around in our cheapo boats! But seriously, that's good to know if water starts coming in there (anyone experience that?)You got quite a woman there, D. Don't see my wife doing that in my lifetime, but anything's possible. I used Devcon 2 ton epoxy to mount curtain rods after a few failed drilling attempts(thin liner!). Used boat hook and hands to keep pressure till they dried (5 minutes).

A good heads up. I think there are six nuts per window, six windows. Close by True Value wants $.41 a nut (better price could be sought). The cost of these nuts would come to $73,800 on the X production line.

Takes me back to Author Hailey's 'Wheels', 30 years ago, discussing miniscule amounts in auto production that become enormous when multiplying numbers produced.

Hello:
The windows on my 95 Mac have 4 screws per and are really held in by foam adhesive tape. I think the screws are for purely secondary attachment or alignment.
