Trailering with mast lowered???

Post by paj637 »

I have a 2006 :macm: and live about 1 mile from the ICW boat ramp in St Marys. This morning I trailered down with the mast "in the ready" to raise but lowered on the mast support. I only drove about 10-15 mph but was concerned about the mast flexing I observed. Put it in the manual listed trailering setup to come back. What's the general opinion on pulling the boat like that with the mast "in the ready" and even storing as such. Am I asking for trouble?? Storage room is not a conern.

paj367,

I trailer with the boom connected but the mast out of the step. But due to the boom and all the lines connected for single-handed sailing I can only get the base of the mast about half-way between the step and the pulpit thus my mast hangs over the back by about 9 feet. Trailers just fine. I have it lashed down securely. No bouncing or flexing. Of course in your configuration you probably have about 13-14 feet hanging off the back so you might get more flex/bounce.

You gonna be able to swing down by Navy Jax in the next few months? We can swap sailing stories (aka "lies").

1. Put a tie down strap over the mast step and around the bottom of the trailer.

2. Put a red flag and/or light on the mast head (remeber to take it off before launching, I did not do that once and got more than a few comments)

3. Watch your turns.

I wouldnt mind storing it like that, but short of moving to launch, I would not trailer it like that, even one mile.

THere is enough mass to easily kink/bend and that would be expensive, and hard to deal with getting a replacement - see some posts on that Charlie Foxtrot previously!!

my two cents...

c130king,
I get down to NASJAX every so often. I actually looked for Mac in the boat yard recently and didn't see any. As of yet, I have no sailing stories. I wimped out getting my boat in the water so far. I work out of town and weekend weather hasn't been too good for initial launch. Two days in a row, the winds have been greater than 20 knots at the ICW here and I am holding out for ideal conditions to launch (singlehandedly). I've been trying not to bend anything or do anything stupid my first few times rigging up. So far so good. Next time you head to JAX shoot me an email. I think the forum has links. I 'll check and we'll get in touch somehow.

Phil - be patient - 20 knots is too much wind to 'learn how to dock' a Mac - even if you have sailed for eons...

I charter keelboats out of Long Beach when I go out there on business, the docking quarters are tight but with all that mass, its a breeze  compared to the light, high windage Mac :macx: or :macm:
