Labor Day

Post by Gemini »

Went out Labor Day. We went out on Lake Dora which is where Mount Dora Florida is (Just North of Orlando Florida and apart of the Harris Chain of Lakes).

We launched from Trimble Park which is just South of Mt. Dora. Great facility, no charge, has two ramps plus loading/unloading docks. A place for about 25 rigs or so. We got there around 8:45 AM and only one other rig was there, we were thinking it might be near capacity, but nope.

The lake wasn't that busy either. We motored the whole time because there wasn't much wind and it was pretty hot. We were planning to do the Dora canal but "chickened out." It is pretty narrow and when I started to approach the bridge (very narrow - and we had the mast down, we didn't rig the boat at all leaving the mast down because we were planning to go through the canal) it got shallow enough to where I thought the rudders would ground. So, I aborted, I didn't feel comfortable going in the canal without rudders for control. I plan to get a telescopic aluminum pole, then i will just go in with motor and couple of inches of dagger board, and with the pole I will feel better if we get in a tight place. Just didn't want to chance getting in there and not being able to control the boat and slam up agaist the canal's walls.

The surpsising thing, there just wasn't many boats out. I didn't even see Sheriffs until 2PM when we headed back. Very strange. And when we loaded back up there were only about 6 or 7 rigs. Good for us.

I've been down the Dora Canal a few times. Lots of fun... I know what you mean about it being rather tight...

Were you able to do it without rudders?

I have been wondering what the minimun depth is with rudders down. Before I moved the boat to a slip in deeper water, I was picking some mud up on the rudders.

We had the same problem on labor day weekend..... NO WIND.
