Fisherman found after nine months lost at sea!!!

Post by ChrisNorton »

Has anyone seen this news story (I heard about it on NPR radio this morning). How unbelievable is this!!! Three Mexican fisherman left their village on the Pacific Coast in November, ran out of gas, and drifted 5000 miles over nine months until they arrived off islands near Australia. They survived by eating fish, killing sea birds and drinking rain water. Incredible!!! Here is a link to one of the many news stories about this:

Does this do anything to the Kon-Tiki experience?

I doubt they will be going to a Sushi bar in the future.

I wonder if there were more in the boat when they started. The Donner Party preferred meat.

A friend flys down to Loreto in Baha each year to fish for a week. He hires a captain with a small 20 foot boat each day,
These Mexican fishermen have no VHF radio, cell phone or GPS. The reliability on their boat engines is highly questionable. The gas is always a problem in Baha and needs to be filtered.
There has been many stories down there of people floating adrift until someone spots them.
Bring your own VHF radio and GPS when going out on a boat any where outside the US.

Two starved to death in epic sea voyage..... Maybe?
"At the start of this fishing trip, there were five people on board the boat. Two of them would have died shortly afterward,"

Two starved to death in epic sea voyage or were eaten?
