Hi,
I just got myself a Mac in India. We sail in lakes and unchartered rivers and I have just got myself a Garmin 340c Fishfinder.
Want advice about whether I did the right thing and advice on mounting too. Pref transon modifications requred and other tips.

Mounting is not too difficult.
For some, its real simple. Many have mounted their transducer by just puttying it to the inside of the hull. If you go this route, you need to make sure you avoid the ballast tank, or it won't read without the tank being full.
I wanted mine on the transom, so I could get accurate temperature readings. But, I didn't want to drill holes in my transom. So, I bought one of those white plastic cutting boards and epoxied it to the transom, then screwed the transducer mount to the board...
Here are a few simple steps:
- hold the board against the transom where you want the transducer to go.
- mark the board, following the shape of the hull.
- cut the board along your mark.
- roughen up the transom, where you are going to affix the board, and board with a course sandpaper.
- apply a marine grade epoxy and tape the board in place.
- the next day, remove the tape and mount the transducer.
The only other issue is the hole through the transom for the cable. I'd suggesting mounting this well above the water line. Garmin includes a cover for the hole. After you have the cable run and that cover installed, just fill the hole and cover with a marine sealant, like 5200.

I ran my transducers cable up the the engine control cables and used the existing access hole. I didn't drill any new holes for the cable. I did drill holes for the mounting screws. I used 3M 5200 sealant, but if tehy were to leak it would be into the ballast tank. I wanted to mount the transducer inside the hull but I couldn't find a spot with a good signal, it can't "see" through air and l wanted it to shoot down, not to the side.
